Tanja Hilderbrand

Lead Instructor
Hello, I’m Tanja! I recently graduated from Northside High School and I am currently attending Columbus State University. I enjoy extending and challenging my knowledge with different topics and I think exploring mathematical concepts is a wonderful way to do that. Some of my hobbies include studying, playing the viola, painting, and spending time with my friends. I particularly enjoy helping others whenever I can and I understand how challenging math can be for some. I love being able to help teach a concept to a child that they’ll hopefully remember for years to come!

Tom Hobbs

Math Instructor
Hi. I’m Tom, and I enjoy teaching math to the wonderful kids at Mathnasium! I retired from teaching high school after almost three decades, most of which were spent at Smiths Station High School. I enjoy teaching and learning. I earned my Master’s Degree in Math Education at what was then Columbus College in 1995, and my Bachelor of Science in Communication (Broadcasting) at the University of Tennessee in 1977. Upon graduating from UT, I was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. Following Infantry Officer Basic, I earned my Ranger tab and Airborne wings before shipping off to Germany, where I spent three years as a platoon leader and, later, executive officer, of a mechanized infantry company. Following that assignment, I came back to Ft. Benning, completed the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, following which I became an instructor for that same course. After completing my five required years, then, as a civilian, I joined Loral Electro-Optical Systems as a MILES (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System) instructor at Ft. Riley, KS. When the government contract ended, I came back to the South where I belong, and started working towards earning a degree so I could teach. I’ve been doing that ever since.

JP Parker

Math Instructor
Hi, my name is JP. I received a M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2019, and I hold a B.S. in Chemistry from Kennesaw State University. I’ve been a musician for most of my life, specifically finding a passion in music through the art forms of writing and vocalizing lyrics. To me, math is the most frustrating and unforgiving, yet simultaneously the most insightful and beautiful science/art form I’ve come across. The areas of application that I study fall within the predictive sciences, such as Probability and Differential Equations, while my favorite areas of study are Abstract Algebra and Complex Analysis. Helping someone to understand a mathematical concept, especially in a way that empowers them as a learner, is unexplainably rewarding. I’m drawn to it, and I could not begin to tell you why, beyond the fact that 1) I enjoy the process and 2) I enjoy it when people succeemiddld. In my free time, I continue to study math, as I find it to be a bit like a craft at which one gets better with practice.

Our Mathnasium Mission

Teach children math so they understand it, master it, and love it. Math can change their lives, and they can change the world.

What I love about Mathnasium is the ability to teach problem-solving skills and make math make sense, while also making a student smile.
