Tammy Goldberg (Director of Education)
earned a degree in Mathematics Education from the College of New Jersey, where she was inspired by a wide array of excellent approaches to math instruction. She holds a Teacher of Mathematics certification and is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Association of Teachers of Mathematics of NYC. She taught Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Algebra 2/Trigonometry, and Probability and Statistics for two years in New Jersey public high schools. Tammy left teaching to pursue an acting career in New York City, where she stumbled upon her true passion while working at her "survival job", making math fun for grade school students in a private setting. Tammy has tutored over 50 public and private school students from Pre-K to 12th grade through an elite private tutoring service in Manhattan and her own company, Tammy's Math Tutoring, since 2003. Tammy's passion to reach more students and improve on her private tutoring instruction led her to the work of Larry Martinek and his company, Mathnasium. She strongly believes that today's students have fallen victim to the "Math Wars" and that the Mathnasium curriculum provides the much-needed reinforcements that will not only keep them afloat, but create problem solvers who can excel in the competitive global marketplace. Tammy sees a particular need for excellent supplemental math enrichment in New York City and is thrilled to be bringing Mathnasium to Manhattan. She looks forward to helping all of her students improve their self confidence by developing a true understanding and love of math. Tammy lives on the Upper East Side of Manhattan with her husband Marc.
Barbara Koehler (Assistant Director of Education)
recently retired from 33 years of teaching in a New Jersey public school. She spent the last 18 years teaching and developing curriculum for gifted and talented students in grades K - 6. Her first 15 years in education were spent in a third grade classroom, where she earned her district's first "Teacher of the Year" award. Barbara holds a degree in elementary education, a master's degree in reading, and a certification in early childhood education. Her favorite gifted and talented subject area to teach was mathematics. She identified gifted math students in her school and designed enrichment curriculum for a once a week pull-out class. She also trained the teachers in her school in methods to best utilize and supplement their materials to meet the needs of their gifted students. She has successfully conducted enrichment programs such as the Stock Market Game, Hands-On Algebra, Chess Club, Personal Finance for Children, Invention Convention, Math League competitions, and a variety of real-life mathematical simulation activities. Barbara has vast experience with thousands of children, many of whom return to visit her and share their stories of life and career choices that were influenced and ignited by an experience in her classroom. Barbara has chosen to spend her retirement doing what she does best: Enriching children's minds and hearts through the brilliance of Mathnasium.
Marc Goldberg (Director of Operations)
earned a degree in accounting from the Pennsylvania State University's Smeal College of Business. Upon graduation, Marc was employed as an associate in the State Tax Consulting practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers. He then moved into the music business as the Client Manager/Sales Director for the production music library company, JRT Music, while pursuing his childhood dream of becoming a rock-star. After four years of being the front-man of a New York City original rock band, Marc's dreams began to take new shapes. He left the stage behind and launched Flash Forward Music, a music publishing and creative services company that provides music to the film and television industry. Marc oversees the operations of Flash Forward Music along with his brother, Ben. Additionally, Marc is a partner in a family-owned financial administration company where his skills are utilized through business consulting and project management. Marc sees himself as the poster child for the unchallenged grade school math student. He sees the way that Larry Martinek, its creator, and his wife, Tammy, challenge children to think and the passion that they have to empower students to excel in math. He is excited for the opportunity to channel his expertise in business operations towards developing the young minds of Manhattan through Mathnasium.
