Dear Parent,

As owner and director of Mathnasium Newton, a Math-only Learning Center in the heart of Newton Highlands, I’d like to extend my best wishes to you and your family. We are here to support you.

Being a Newton resident and parent to a Peirce School 5th Grader and a Brown Middle School 7th Grader, I understand first hand the premium that Boston area families place on education.

After receiving my Master’s Degree from M.I.T. and a rewarding 20 year career in Information Systems consulting, I am excited to open the first Mathnasium Center in the Boston area. Using the time-tested proprietary methods and curriculum that have helped thousands of students in 175 Mathnasium centers nationwide, I am committed to helping your children keep up and get ahead in Math.

Mathnasium is not just for kids who love Math. If your child is math-phobic, I have something important to share with you: Kids don’t hate Math, they just hate being frustrated and intimidated by Math. You will see a huge change in your child’s attitude toward the subject once Math starts to make sense to them. Many Mathnasium parents see this remarkable change one to two months after the child starts coming to Mathnasium.  With a few exceptions, our students do not dread but look forward to coming to Mathnasium.  Read quotes from our center parents.

Whether your child needs a little catch-up help or is not challenged enough in his Math class, our highly specialized Math Instructors will create an individually customized Math learning plan for your child’s success. Right now, through March 1st, we are offering a no risk free trial. No enrollment fee, no assessment fee, no strings attached. Watch your child’s attitude about Math change.

Mathnasium is not a group class.  The Mathnasium method revolves around eyeball-to-eyeball instruction individualized to your child’s learning plan, learning style and learning pace.  While your child is doing independent work or practice, the instructor can be helping up to two other students in the same pod.  This keeps the tuition affordable while maintaining the one-on-one teaching format which is so crucial to explaining math for some students.  Per session cost starts as low as $34/hour depending on grade level and frequency of visits.

Call us today at (617) 340-3665 to discuss your child’s unique needs and try out our no-risk free trial.

Quotes from Parents of students at Mathnasium Newton

“Sarah has really loved her experience at Mathnasium.  She is always excited to go, and her enthusiasm for math has really exploded.  She loves the teachers she works with and her math skills have improved tremendously.  Thank you!”  Amy Shapiro, parent of a 4th grader at Mason-Rice.

“We are so pleased with Riley’s report card.  Math used to be his weakest subject, now it's one of his strongest.  Thanks to you and your team, you've really turned her around.” — Dr. L. Steinberg, parent of a 6th grader at Baker School, Brookline.

“I want to let you know that you guys are A+ !  Jack and Erin are still enjoying the classes - no complaints at all and when it is time to go, they get right in the car!  Actually, Jack "ran" out the door last week!  The sessions always seem to be very productive as the kids tell me how many worksheets they complete.   By the end of the school year I noticed an improvement in math for both kids.”  Bonnie Carey, parent of 3rd and 5th graders at Peirce Elementary, W. Newton.

"Signing my son up at Mathnasium is one of the best things we've ever done for his education. He looks forward to the lessons all week. He loves his homework. In fact, I caught myself in a parenting moment the other day almost saying "if you don't do your chores I won't let you go to Mathnasium this week." Then I realized how lucky I was.  Thanks for the great motivation and math skills."  --  Lee McIntyre, parent of a 7th grader at Parker School, Brookline.

“I can’t believe how fast Drew’s time went at Mathnasium!  It’s been extremely valuable for him, especially identifying the areas that he was deficient in and getting him proficient in those areas.” – Susan Michals, parent of an 8th grader at BB&N, Cambridge

“Adrian’s confidence in math has really improved over the last few months.  The instructors have been great (younger) male role models for Adrian to look up to.  I've been impressed with both of them - really great guys who are patient, easy going, friendly, and academically so strong.”  Cathy Lee, parents of a 3rd and 5th grader at Peirce Elementary, Newton

"My daughter said she learned much more in her few sessions with Glen than she did all semester long at school."  M. Cote, parent of 11th grader at Needham High

“No question Lydia is enjoying it and has helped her confidence in math greatly.   She really enjoys your company too by the way.  We also had a conference with her teacher at Mason Rice and got some extremely positive feedback on her recent successes – so it’s working for sure.”  David Carroll, parent of a 4th grader at Mason-Rice.

“I brought Tze here because he found math at school too easy.  Because Tze can work on more challenging material here, it has kept his enthusiasm up.  Qiu Gong, parent of a 8th grader at Brown Middle School, Newton.

"It's been a huge difference. Chris was really struggling with math when I first brought him here.  He just brought home his report card with an A in Math!  And he actually likes Math now, he loves coming here."  Christine Brooks, parent of a 4th grader at Countryside Elem., Newton.

“Thanks again for all you've done to help James achieve his goal of getting a 700 on the Math SAT before he turned 13. When we first started I knew that we were handing you a lofty goal, but you really came through for us. Thanks!”  Update from Lee McIntyre, parent of a 7th grader at Parker School, Brookline.

“We just had a conference with Lance's teacher. She asked us if Lance was getting math help outside school because she noticed a huge difference in his math skills. I told them Lance goes to Mathnasium twice a week after school.  She said Lance has improved a lot in the last few months.”  Alla Shloshman, parent of a 4th grader at John Eliot Elementary, Needham.

Our Staff and Instructors

Newton Myrtha Chang – Instructional Director, Mathnasium of Newton
Myrtha received her math education in Singapore.   She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Science degree in Information technology from M.I.T., Cambridge, MA.

After a rewarding career in information systems, Myrtha is excited to open the first Mathnasium Center in the Boston area. As a Newton parent, she understands first-hand the high value families in the community put on education, especially in the area of Math, which will drive the majority of our children's careers. Having been schooled under the Singapore Math curriculum - with its strong emphasis on basic core skills - and now having children in the Newton public school system, Myrtha is familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of the traditional core skills approach vs. modern explorative approach.

Newton Larry Martinek, Chief Instructional Officer, Developer of Mathnasium Program
Larry has spent his entire career finding a better way to teach math. From inner city to public schools, to acclaimed magnet schools, to leading private and parochial schools, Larry has served as both a classroom teacher and as an educational consultant. He has designed curriculum, teaching strategies, and teaching materials designed to help students and teachers learn math more effectively. He has trained teachers in the art and science of boosting student’s ability to “do” math, thereby increasing student’s math scores and feeling of self-worth. Larry is the developer of Mathnasium’s educational program – one of the most comprehensive and innovative curriculums ever produced for teaching math.

Newton Karen DeSilva - Center Manager/Instructor
Karen graduated from Providence College in 2007 Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary and Special Education. Karen’s mother, a career teacher, instilled a passion for learning in Karen who is now a certified elementary and moderate disabilities teacher. Her goal is to engage students using a hands on approach, making math a positive and fun learning experience.

Newton Glen Dawson – Lead Instructor
Glen is an experienced professional tutor, and also a full time college math professor at a local Boston-area college. He has an advanced degree in mathematics, and teaches all math courses up through Calculus.

Glen works primarily with middle and high school students. He has turned many frustrated “C” students into confident “A” students with his unique approach that flips the traditional tutoring model upside down. Glen’s students think of him as their own “personal math trainer”. They really look forward to their sessions, because they quickly realize that they can perform well in math, and with a lot less time and effort than they realized!
