Kurt Lawrence, Owner and Center Director
Kurt earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of California, Sacramento. He has enjoyed a 20+ year career as a Software Engineer in both the public and private sectors. He has held positions with Bechtel, the State of California, Alliance Data Systems, and most recently as a Systems Analyst with ACI Worldwide. Additionally, he owned his own computer consulting business for 6 years, working with banks from Japan to Cincinnati to Kuwait. His work with complex computer algorithms requires a strong understanding of mathematical concepts.
Since becoming a father in 2004, Kurt has enjoyed many moments of teaching his two young daughters new things, from the most simple to the more complex. It was in this teaching that Kurt first felt compelled to “make a difference” in the lives of other young people, and a stirring to do something different with his career. Mathnasium’s simple yet powerful mission to “teach children math the way that makes sense to them” struck a chord with Kurt. He is excited to share his love of math with young children and to inspire them to become the best they can be.
Staci Lawrence, Public Relations Manager
Staci holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Washington. Prior to deciding to stay home with the couple’s two children, Staci had a 16-year career in health care. She worked as a Consulting Analyst for William M. Mercer, a Reimbursement Specialist for Providence Health Plan, and an Account Manager for Solucient, a software company providing clinical and operational outcome tools to the nation’s hospitals.
Staci has always loved math, and fondly remembers her dad with graph paper and “doing math with letters (not numbers)” when she was a child. The sense and logic of math permeates every aspect of life, from cooking to shopping to the professional world. Knowing the difference a solid background in math can make, Staci looks forward to spreading the word about Mathnasium to the Omaha area and encouraging all young people to excel.
Jessica Mercer, Instructor
Jessica earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from St. Olaf College and later obtained a doctorate in Neuroscience from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. For the past two years, she served as an instructor in the Biology departments at Creighton University and the University of Nebraska in Omaha for college students. She has enjoyed teaching a variety of courses from Human Biology to Genetics. She also worked as a math and science tutor throughout college, which reaffirmed her plan to go into education. In working with students one-on-one, Jessica found that she had a strong desire to help students feel more confident about their studies and wants to get them excited about learning. She finds it especially rewarding to build a trusting relationship with the student and improve their perception of a challenging subject like math or science. Many students find their math classes to be scary or too hard - Jessica hopes she can show students how fun and exciting math can be once you have the right tools.
Jessica Brandt, Instructor
Jessica is a sophomore enrolled at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. She is majoring in education with a minor in math. She wants to be a teacher because she hopes to make a difference in the lives of many students by instilling in them an enthusiasm for learning and a thirst for knowledge. Jessica has extensive experience with children by involving herself in programs such as the YMCA. Through work experiences, she has adapted the necessary tools to maintain a professional yet productive environment. She would like students to be more comfortable with mathematics. She wants students to feel that we care about them as individual persons and that we are here to support their education. She has always loved math and cannot wait to share it with others.
Elly Drouillard, Instructor
Elly is a high school senior currently enrolled at Millard North High School in Omaha, Nebraska. She plans to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the Fall of 2010 and major in Mathematics Education. Since the third grade, Elly has been tutoring students in math. She enjoys tutoring because it allows her to share her passion for math with others. She finds it personally rewarding when she begins to see recognition and understanding in students that start out disliking math because they are bewildered and frustrated by it. She firmly believes that a strong foundation in math basics will reduce the amount of confusion students often face in higher level math courses.
