Kurt Lawrence, Owner
Kurt earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of California, Sacramento. He has enjoyed a 20+ year career as a Software Engineer in both the public and private sectors. He has held positions with Bechtel, the State of California, Alliance Data Systems, and ACI Worldwide. Additionally, he owned his own computer consulting business for 6 years, working with banks from Japan to Cincinnati to Kuwait. Kurt opened Mathnasium because he wanted to “make a difference” in the lives of young people. Mathnasium’s simple, yet powerful, mission to teach children math the way that makes sense to them struck a chord with Kurt. He is excited to share his love of math and learning with young children and to inspire them to become the best they can be.
Staci Lawrence, Owner
Staci earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics from the University of Washington. Prior to opening Mathnasium with her husband, Staci had a 16-year career in health care. She worked as a Consulting Analyst for William M. Mercer, a Reimbursement Specialist for Providence Health Plan, and an Account Manager for Solucient, a software company providing clinical and operational outcome tools to the nation’s hospitals. Currently, Staci provides direct management oversight to the operations of Mathnasium of West Omaha, as well as establishing and implementing the overall direction for the Center. Staci has always loved math, and fondly remembers her dad with his graph paper “doing math with letters” when she was a child. Staci believes that all children, and especially young girls, should be encouraged to excel in math and science. Knowing the difference a solid background in math can make, Staci enjoys making Mathnasium a place where students are given the tools to learn math in a way that makes sense to them.
Jessica Brandt, Center Director
Jessica has been with Mathnasium of West Omaha since it opened in 2009 and was promoted to Center Director in 2010. She has been a significant contributor to the growth and success of the Center, and is most often seen hard at work teaching students, correcting worksheets, creating learning plans and playing math games with students. As Center Director, Jessica works directly with parents and children as she brings to bear her great enthusiasm for teaching and math. She is currently finishing her Bachelor’s Degree in Education, focusing on teaching Middle School math. She is on the Dean’s List at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Jessica wants to be a teacher because she hopes to make a difference in the lives of many students by instilling in them an enthusiasm for learning and a thirst for knowledge. She hopes to make Mathnasium students more comfortable with math, and it is important to her to convey that Mathnasium cares about each student individually and that we are here to support their education.
Jamie Anderson, First Steps Program Director
Jamie graduated from Kansas State University in 2008 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with a concentration in Special Education. Jamie moved to Nebraska shortly afterwards and loves living in Omaha with her husband, Tyson. During the school year, she teaches kindergarten at J. Sterling Morton Elementary in the Millard school district. Jamie is passionate about early childhood education and truly loves working with young children. By incorporating music, literature, movement, and hands-on exploration into instruction, Jamie helps her students discover math and patterns in the world around them. Seeing her students build a love of learning keeps her coming to work everyday. Jamie is excited to start the First Steps program this summer and to inspire her student's exploration and natural curiosity in math.
Rob Vanderveen, Instructor
Rob is a sophomore student at UNO. He is planning on earning a major in civil engineering with a minor in mathematics. Rob has always loved math, and throughout high school, physics and calculus were the subjects he excelled in and found to be interesting and fun. His desire to deepen his understanding for these courses is what originally led him to engineering. Rob’s first experiences with tutoring came in his later years of high school and he has continued to tutor since. One of the things that he enjoys most about tutoring math is finding the way that each individual learns the best. Rob is excited to teach students, and finds nothing more satisfying than helping someone understand something new.
