Heather Larrabee, Owner/Center Director
Heather spent over 12 years as a public educator before deciding to become a Mathnasium owner. She spent most of her career teaching fourth and fifth grade in Southern California and Central Virginia before reluctantly leaving the classroom to become a District Math Specialist. Her favorite part of being a District Math Specialist was the opportunity to work with and support teachers from kindergarten through high school. When she returned to California in 2010, she became a Math Instructional Coach for the Elk Grove Unified School District. Contrary to what some may think, math did not always come easy for Heather. Her passion for teaching math in a way that makes sense comes from her own difficulties both as a student in high school math, and then as a teacher trying to teach her first class of fourth graders how to divide. She quickly realized she herself didn't have a deep enough understanding to help her students make sense of what they were doing. So, back to school she went to become a better teacher! Heather now has a Master's in Mathematics Education, K-8, from San Diego State University and a Post-Master's Certificate in Educational Leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University. Heather now loves helping others find their passion for math!
Hawley Anderson, Instructor
Hawley is a High School math teacher in Elk Grove Unified School District. She has a BS in Biochemistry and a Teaching Credential from UC Davis. Over the years, she's taught math from Pre-Algebra to Pre-Calculus (with some Physics and Chemistry thrown in), but she specializes in Geometry and Algebra 2. She loves working with kids to help them gain a deeper understanding of math and feel good about their skills. She's been in the classroom for many years and is enjoying the change of pace and chance to work one-on-one with students at Mathnasium. In her free time, she enjoys traveling with her family, reading good books and cooking yummy meals. Hawley has already proven to be a great asset to our team, and we are so excited to have such an awesome team-player on board!
Kayla Bru, Instructor
An incoming third year Civil Engineering major, Kayla joined the Mathnasium Team in August, 2016. She graduated from Franklin High School in Elk Grove, has attended Cal Poly San Luis Obispo for her first two years of college, and plans to transfer to Sacramento State University to continue exploring her major. Outside of Mathnasium, she is an art and music enthusiast, working to improve her drawing and piano playing skills. She also loves spending time with family and enjoying good food. Since she enjoys helping others with any math-related assignments, she wanted to lend her knowledge to students who struggle with math.
