My child already excels in math. Will Mathnasium address his or her needs?
Absoultely. Since Mathnasium is customized to the needs of each individual student, we can help advanced students stay engaged and stimulated by introducing them to more challenging math topics. More importantly, we can also help your child to develop even stronger numeric fluency and critical thinking skills, which are essential for continued success in math.
My child once had relatively strong math grades, but now struggles and is deeply discouraged. How did this happen?
Often times, kids who appear to be doing well in math can later reveal gaps in their math foundation that had gone undetected for years. In some cases, kids rely on rote memorization to pass tests, but lack a deeper understanding of how numbers interrelate. In other cases, kids squeak by with only a surface understanding of pivotal concepts that form the groundwork of more complex math operations. Some kids have a passable understanding of key concepts, but are thrown off-kilter by an unexpected change in their school program or in their family lives. Yet, class moves on relentlessly and these kids never get the opportunity to get back on track. They begin to expect failure and buy into the idea that they are just not good at math. Once kids lose their self-confidence, they can experience deep anxiety and frustration when asked to do math, which further compromises their ability to get caught up. Plummeting grades and worried parents seem to compound the feeling of helplessness. Kids in this situation often resist their parents' attempts to help with homework because they would rather fight with their parents than continue to put forth effort that seems only to result in failure.
So will a private one-on-one tutor work?
While there are situations in which a private tutor can be useful, over-reliance on a private tutor is often a temporary solution to a long-term problem. Private tutors generally help children survive tonight's homework or tomorrow's test, but even the most skilled, dedicated private tutor does not have access to the tools needed to address the underlying issues. To achieve meaningful, long-term improvement, kids need the benefit of a customized learning plan based on a comprehensive assessment. They need a supportive social atmosphere surrounded by other students striving towards similar goals and a team of supportive instructors who can hold them accountable and encourage them when they feel discouraged. They need the product of over 30 years of research in math education which has resulted in the Mathnasium Method. Kids deserve to be supported by a group of dedicated, highly trained instructors who can make a long-term impact on their understanding of math.
So how is Mathnasium different from the rest?
The level of customization that Mathnasium provides for each student is unparalleled. The basis of each learning plan that we create is a detailed written and oral assessment that is designed to tell us not only what students know, but also how they think. We use information that we glean from the assessment to form both an academic and personal bond with students so that they understand that we care about their progress and are committed to helping them succeed. Our assessment takes into account both objective and subjective criteria to form a complete profile of each child so we can hone in and what each student needs. Confidence-building and fun are paramount to the delivery of our instruction. We consistently involve props, maniuplatives, games, and other learning tools when appropriate to solidify a concept. Our focus on mental math, number sense, and critical thinking development pave the way for real results when we help with homework and test prep. Kids who had once considered math the bane of their existence routinely find themselves asking their parents to return to Mathnasium.
