When local entrepreneurs Michael and Gerilyn Yanke opened Mathnasium of Menomonee Falls in September 2009, one of their objectives was to turn their math-only learning center into a positive place where kids felt welcome, accepted and at ease. This, they felt, was the ideal environment in which to learn. Now, almost a year after opening, the Yankes have seen their goal come to fruition through their passion for teaching and genuine caring for the students. The results: numerous student success stories and glowing testimonials from families. "We have only been at Mathnasium for about six weeks but our daughter absolutely loves going there," reads a testimonial from a satisfied parent. "Her fear of discussing math with someone for an hour has turned into her being eager to have one-on-one time with someone at the center." For their efforts, Mathnasium Corporate Headquarters awarded the Yankes with its 2010 Best Environment award. "Our Mathnasium is a homey place where the kids are accepted 100%," says Gerilyn. "They truly feel like they belong here and it's wonderful to see their confidence levels rise as they improve their math skills. Many have asked if they can come every day!'" The award was presented at the Sixth Annual International Mathnasium Franchise Convention, held at the Walt Disney World Swan Resort in Orlando, Fla. Every year, Mathnasium franchisees from across the U.S. and all over the world flock to the convention to network, listen to presentations, and share best practices about a wide range of topics ranging from educational strategies to learning center operations. "Our annual convention gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the achievements of accomplished individuals in our system," said Mathnasium Director of Franchise Operations Mary Feldman. "Michael and Gerilyn have created an environment that benefits their students both intellectually and emotionally, a practice which makes them very effective educators.
