Carolyn Luu, Center Director
When Carolyn was in grade school, she knew what she wanted to be when she grew up: a math teacher. To achieve that, she graduated from UC Davis with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics Education with a minor in Secondary Education. However, after more than 15 years of teaching in public and private schools as well as non-profit organizations, she recognized some emerging patterns in K-12 education. During her years of teaching in the middle and high schools, she saw many kids struggling with basic math concepts. The problem was that she had no time to tutor these children in these basic concepts while employed as a public school teacher and there were too many to help after school. Something had to change. With a partner interested in creating that change as well, Carolyn co-founded a non-profit learning center to help these kids. The center proved very successful but it also tutored all subjects. Carolyn wanted to create a center for math students only and wanted to do so with a for profit enterprise. After months of research, she found the right franchise company. Carolyn has so much natural energy that she doesn’t need coffee in the morning. Just put a student in front of her to teach and off she goes. Teaching is her caffeine. She enjoys teaching math in a way that is both fun to kids and makes sense to them. Her kids enjoy learning more when they are laughing at the same time and that happens nearly every session. She truly believes in the concept that “If you give a student a fish, he will throw it in the trash can because it smells bad and has eye balls staring at them. But if you teach a student to fish, he will have fun learning as well as getting some good eats for life.” Carolyn loves to laugh. She believes laughing is the best medicine to health.
