Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. CenterDirectorAndrew Kelly, Owner/Managing Director 

After spending several years as an information technology specialist in corporate America, Andrew is excited to be directing his time and energy into helping students excel in math. Andrew has a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of Maine and an MBA in Finance from Rollins College. He served as a weather officer in the Air Force and is a decorated Desert Storm veteran. He also served in the U.S. Peace Corps as a teacher in Kazakhstan, where he gained an appreciation for the profession of teaching and learned to speak fluent Russian. He lives in Palm Harbor where he enjoys spending time on the water with his family and their golden retriever puppy Archie (who will pop into the center when he calms down some more).

Fun Fact:  I once did stand-up comedy in New York City

Favorite Number:  4, because of the symmetry.

Favorite Math Joke:  "I put my root beer in a square glass, now its just beer."


Whitney Detweiler, Lead Instructor

Whitney is a former middle-school math teacher, where she taught many different types of math classes, from 6th Grade Intensive Math to Honors Algebra.  Whitney was also the head Girls' Volleyball Coach!  She received her Bachelor of Science in Business from Florida State University (Go Noles!).   Whitney and her husband recently welcomed their first child David.  She is loving being a mom! 

Fun Fact:  I lived in Florence, Italy for a semester in college!

Favorite Number:  22.  I met my husband when I was 22, and we were married on the 22nd of June.

Favorite Math Joke:  "Where do math teachers go on vacation?  Times Square of course."

I Like Working at Mathnasium Because:  I love working with students on their math skills.  My favorite moment is when that light bulb goes off and something they were struggling with finally clicks!  Seeing that joy on a child's face never gets old.


Marcus Hammel, Lead Instructor 

Originally from San Jose, California Marcus graduated with a BFA in Art-Graphic Design from Molloy College in Long Island, NY.  He has experience in tutoring students in math as well as training players of all ages in soccer.  When not teaching young Mathletes Marcus enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons playing and watching sports, going to the beach or having movie nights.  His favorite numbers are 7 and 13 and he's always up for a good jumble or crossword puzzle!

Fun Fact:  I share the same name as Luke Skywalker (except he has an extra L in Hammel).

Favorite Number:  I have two, 7 and 13, because they are prime examples of complimentary luck!

Favorite Math Joke:  A student went into math class and said to the teacher "To show you how well I understand fraction, I've only done half of my homework."

I Choose to Work at Mathnasium Because: The feeling of seeing a student achieve that "Aha!" moment when they understand is beyond words and very satisfying.


Zack Rosso, Instructor

Zack is a junior at Cambridge Christian School, and loves helping people whenever he can.  He is a big brother and mentor to his two younger brothers, frequently helping them with their math and other life lessons.  Zack is a big hockey fan and diehard Lightning supporter (GO BOLTS!!!).  Zack has big plans after graduation, with a goal to attend Notre Dame University to major in chemical engineering.  

Fun Fact:  Although he appears to be a mild-mannered math whiz, Zack has a black belt in tae-kwon-do!

Favorite Number:  3, because I am one of three sons in our family.

Favorite Math Joke:  What do you get when you divide the circumference of an apple by its diameter?  Apple Pi!!

I Choose to Work at Mathnasium Because:  "I love math, teaching others and meeting different people.  Mathnasium is the perfect place for all three!


Darren Tran, Instructor 

Darren is pursuing a biomedical engineering degree at the University of South Florida.  When he's not binging on math problems or episodes of American Horror Story, you can find him running, programming or reading.  Darren will often tell corny jokes while he's teaching but he knows cementing a strong understanding of math into the next generation is serious business!

Fun Fact:  I think Taylor Swift's songs are pretty catchy!

Favorite Number:  42.  Its the answer to life, the universe and everything.  Embrace it.

Favorite Math Joke:  What did the acorn say when he grew up?  Geometry!  (this is an example of "acorny" joke!)

I Choose to Work at Mathnasium Because:  I choose to work at Mathnasium because I enjoy the challenge of teaching, as every kid is unique.  I enjoy working with others to pursue a common goal, and of course I get to witness individual successes of others, its a great feeling!


Rosemary Brunal, Instructor

Rosemary graduated from the University of South Florida with a degree in Elementary Education, and has her Florida Teaching Certificate.  It was her love of working with children that drove Rosemary into teaching and tutoring.

Fun Fact:  I am #7 of 9 kids...and...I'm a twin!  Also I really love to bake :).

Favorite Number:  17.  I'm not sure why, but I've always liked 17.  It was always my jersey number in sports.  Maybe its because 7 is a lucky number and adding 10 just makes it that much luckier!

Favorite Math Joke:  "Parallel lines have so much in common, its a shame they will never meet."

I Like Working at Mathnasium Because:  I enjoy working with children, especially teaching.  I want to help children reach their full potential, and Mathnasium is all about that!


Nicholas Pustam, Instructor

Nicholas is a senior at Sickles High School. He has a fascination with science and has enrolled in every science advanced placement course offered at the school.  Nicholas also enjoys sports, earning his varsit letter twice in lacrosse.  Nicholas is also president of the Spanish Honor Society. Impresionante!

Fun Fact:  I have traveled much of the world, including Europe, Central America and Asia!

Favorite Number:  4, because I like waffles.  It makes sense to me!

Favorite Math Joke:  "Why was 6 afraid of 7?  Because 7 8 9!"

I Like Working at Mathnasium Because:  I want to pass my knowledge on to future generations.


Mustufa Harianawala, Instructor

Mustufa ("Mu") is a PADI certified scuba diving instructor.  When he is not blowing bubbles under water he enjoys traveling, adventure sports, cooking and trying different cuisines.  Mu has a Bachelors Degree in Management Studies from the University of Mumbai in India.  He enjoys teaching and helping others.

Fun Fact:  I have ridden my motorcycle in the Mimalayas, on the highest road in the world!

Favorite Number:  7, and I honestly don't know why, its just in me.

Favorite Math Joke:  "Parallel lines have so much in common, its a shame they will never meet."
