Antoinette Watson, Center Director
Antoinette graduated with honors from Roosevelt University with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education and a minor in math. She has taken advanced math courses through Calculus II at the college level. It was during one of these advanced courses where she first met her husband. She is state certified to teach elementary education, and has worked as a 5th grade teacher's aide. She found that she liked working with kids in small groups. Antoinette was drawn to Mathnasium because of the focus they put on making math make sense to kids and the emphasis that is put on developing number sense. She has always loved math and learned many of her early math skills by playing card games with her dad.
Alex Long, Assistant Center Director
Alex is an educator and a mathematician, and has been a Mathnasium instructor for almost seven years. She graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University with a bachelor's degree in mathematics and a teaching certificate. With experience in formal and informal education, Alex hopes that her students develop problem solving skills as well as an appreciation for mathematics. She also spent several years at the Museum of Science and Industry working in various exhibits - her favorite, of course, is Numbers in Nature!
Simone is currently a freshman attending DePaul University, and is pursuing a major in Computer Science. He has taken math courses up to Calculus AB, all of which he passed with flying colors, and is now in the process of studying discrete mathematics. The reason for which he teaches at Mathnasium derives from his love to help and aid others. Because of his proficiency in mathematics and his previous experience with tutoring the same subject, he believes that the best way to achieve part of that lofty goal is by being an instructor at Mathnasium, where he can help set young students up for a life of happiness and success. Though in the future he plans to pursue a career in the Computer Science field, he is also eager to continue his work at Mathnasium as an instructor.
Omar is a senior at Hinsdale Central High School and is currently enrolled in AP Calculus BC. It was not until after he attended Mathnasium as a student for two years that he found his passion for math. Now he is driven to spread that passion with his students. He finds teaching younger students to be very rewarding. He has a passion for film, music, and plays tennis at his school. In the future, Omar plans to study psychology.
Mia is a senior at Benet Academy in Lisle. This year she is taking AP AB Calculus. Her passion for math derives from some of her favorite teachers in middle school who inspire her to have a career in education later in life. She is the Editor-in-Chief for her school’s newspaper and is very involved with the school’s musicals. In college she plans to study journalism and english.
Ellen Schlesak Lead Instructor
Ellen graduated from Northen Illinois University with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, and a minor in Math. She later recieved her Master's degree in Math Education from National Lewis University. Ellen began her career teaching at the elementary level. Then, her passion for math inspired her to specialize, so Ellen moved on to teach Middle School math. Over the years she taught at many levels, from remedial classes to Honors Algebra 1. Ellen taught on the North Shore for over a decade, and then in a Northwest suburb until she retired. She loves working with students on a more individualized basis, so she was excited when she discovered Mathnasium. "Not only does an understanding of math result in academic accomplishments, but it also enables students to more clearly interperet their world. The mathnasium program is an outstanding resource, and I look forward to helping students understand and enjoy math."
Syeda is currently a senior at Willowbrook High School. During her high school years, she has taken Geometry Honors, Alegebra & Trigonometry Honors, and Precalc. Currently, she is taking AP Calculus AB. She plans to graduate high school a semster early and attend college courses at the College of Dupage. Then, she would like to complete the next four years at a University in Chicago. She is still undecided but is leaning towards going into the medical field. Syeda has 3 younger siblings so she enjoys helping them with their school work and babysits when needed. Growing up, her dad was an engineering major so he would always push her to do better which grew her passion for math.
Jenni is currently a Senior at Hinsdale Central High School and is presently enrolled in Pre-Calculus Honors. Growing up, her dad worked in the maths and sciences while her mom worked in investments, so math played a fundamental part in her childhood. This has played a huge role in shaping her love for math. Not only that, but she has also spent a lot of time around younger cousins and family friends, which has equally contributed to her experience and love of teaching children. In the future, she plans to major in finance/investments, which would combine her love of math and business.
Ryann Johnson- Wojnicki
Ryann is senior at Benet Academy in Lisle. This year she is taking AP Calculus AB. Her love for math started at a young age and has continued to grow every year. She finds teaching young students so rewarding, especially in a subject like math. She is on the varsity golf team and is very involved with the arts. She loves being part of school musicals and the chorus. In college she plans to study computer science.
Courtney is a senior at Hinsdale Central High School and is currently enrolled in AP Calculus AB. She began to realize her love for math in algebra, when she first began to see how all the concepts she had learned were connected. In class, she loves to help her fellow students understand the material, which inspired her to join the Mathnasium team. In the future, Courtney would like to study linguistics.
Patti is a retired math teacher. She attended Marquette University and graduated with an elementary teaching degree. She continued her education at National Louis University where she received her Masters Degree in math education. Patti taught junior high math for 33 years and spent the last 27 years teaching in the Western suburbs. She wants to continue teaching math, so Mathnasium is a perfect fit.
Brooke is a senior at Hinsdale Central High School. She had been a student at this Mathnasium for 5years. Before enrolling as a Mathnasium student she did not have a love of math. But soon after becoming a student she developed a passion for it. She recently discovered a love of teaching and working with kids while in a leadership position at Cub Creek Science Camp. In school she is a member of the stage crew and book club. In the future she wants to study zoology so she can contine working with animals and teaching kids.
Raina is a Senior at Hinsdale Central and she is currently enrolled in Pre-Calculus Honors. Growing up, her parents stresed the importance of math in one's life which inspired her passion for the subject. She has been a tutor since she was in the sixth grade and has always had a love for teaching kids. In school, she is a co-president of the Scientific Inquiry Club and in Philharmonic Orchestra as well as being on the Junior Varsity Girls Golf team. In the future, Raina would like to go into business law.
Anna is currently a sophomore attending Grinnell College and is pursuing a degree in chemistry. She has completed AP Calculus and extended her knowledge of mathematics and science during her first year at Grinnell. Anna has always pursued math and has had a deep passion for the subject from an early age. At Mathnasium, she hopes to share her love and drive to understand mathematical concepts with her students and give them confidence in the classroom.
Amy has a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and is currently working on a master’s in Curriculum and Instruction at Eastern Illinois University. She has been a high school teacher for the past 6 years and is currently working at a high school in Kankakee County. In addition to teaching high school, she has also been an instructor at Mathnasium on and off since 2015. Math has always been her favorite subject and she enjoys helping her students make math make sense!
Omar Ali, Center Owner
Omar graduated from the Northwestern University McCormick School of Engineering with a bachelor of science in civil engineering. After working as a civil engineer for three years following graduation, Omar fed his hunger for entrepreneurship by starting his own construction business, which is still in operation today. Omar was drawn to Mathnasium because it offered something different from other after-school instructional programs, particularly its focus on practical elements of math such as problem solving and mental math. Omar serves on the boards of two private schools in the Western Suburbs of Chicago where he lives with his wife and their three children.
