Our tutors foster a caring, encouraging environment that helps kids thrive and learn! Read below to learn more about our talented team:

Becki Clingan, Center Director

Becki grew up in Overland Park and graduated from SM West in 1988. She has always loved math and had an understanding of the way numbers work. She graduated from JCCC with a degree in Sign Language Interpreting, but later returned to take more math classes. Before working at Mathnasium, she was a sign language interpreter, houseparent on a boys’ ranch in New Mexico, baby photographer, and owned her own bagel-making business.

When she started working at Mathnasium in 2013, she knew she had found her niche. The Mathnasium Method aligned perfectly with her own philosophies. Her favorite thing to tell the student is that while other subjects may change, numbers never do.

She and her husband have been married for 27 years. They have 5 children and 3  grandchildren. In her spare time, Becki enjoys reading, geocaching, crafting with her Silhouette Cameo, and sci-fi.

 Leo Castro, Lead Instructor

Hello! I am Leo and I am thrilled to share my love of learning with others. I am no stranger to Kansas as I studied at the University of Kansas, completing two Bachelor’s degrees in Mathematics and Philosophy. I also have my Master's in Philosophy from the University of Houston. In addition to math, I have taught or tutored logic, physics, Russian, Spanish, and music to various ages - from young children to college students. I love to help people maximize the benefits from additional learning opportunities. I am currently working on my IPh.D. at UMKC in Educational Leadership, Policy, and Foundations. During my free time, I spend my time playing board games, performing stand-up comedy, and drawing.

Rylan Sampson, Assistant Center Director

Rylan Sampson is an alumnus of UCM with a M.S. in Mathematics. Rylan has been teaching math since getting their start as a graduate teaching assistant in 2010 at K-State, and was honored to receive the 2020-21 Superior Teaching Award from UMKC's School of Graduate Studies. Something Rylan loves about Mathnasium is having the opportunity to teach math at so many different skill levels using games, puzzles, workbooks, and more! In their downtime, Rylan can be found drinking tea, playing retro video games, cooking, playing the piano, and spending time with their cat Maggy.

Cameron Akagi, Instructor

Cameron Akagi is a Music Education major at UMKC. He was born in Minnesota but moved to Lenexa when he was in elementary school. He has always enjoyed helping others and he  especially loves teaching and seeing that lightbulb moment for young students. He thinks  Mathnasium has the right combination of instruction and curriculum where these moments happen every day. Outside of Mathnasium, he enjoys playing trombone in a wide variety of groups, studying all things music, and cooking.

Annette Berrey, Instructor

Annette enjoys helping students understand math. She first discovered a love for math during her high school years and pursued her love of math in an engineering degree at K-State. After working as a mechanical engineer for five years at a natural gas company, three years at a telecommunication company, and about two years at a engineering consulting company, she decided to change directions and pursue a job that focused less on projects and more on helping people. At this pivotal point, she began tutoring students in math at Johnson County Community College. Now 18 years later, she is still tutoring at JCCC and has throughout the years tutored math privately to students of various grade levels. She is excited to be working at Mathnasium and enjoys using the teaching methods to help students.

In her free time, Annette enjoys sewing, crafting, and going for walks in the park. She also enjoys going to live theatre, going to musical events, and getting together with family and friends.

David Sandoval, Training and Operation Manager

David is a graduate of the University of Tulsa with a BA in History. While he still enjoys reading history, particularly the history of math and science, his career in education brought him back to his childhood love of numbers and math. David taught high school math in the Dallas area and has done extensive private tutoring for students in middle/high school. In 2013, after moving back to the Tulsa area, he discovered Mathnasium. While he began working at Mathnasium as an instructor, David decided to make Mathnasium a career because of the profound impact he saw in the Mathnasium Method to build students' skills and confidence. David served as a Mathnasium Center Director for nearly 5 years and has recently transitioned to a new role as Training and Operations Manager for our network of centers in the Tulsa and Kansas City areas. David works one-on-one with each new Mathnasium instructor to build understanding and confidence in the Mathnasium Method.

In addition to his work at Mathnasium, David is an avid reader. He enjoys spending time with his friends who get together weekly for table-top games. He has fun experimenting with Latin flavors in the kitchen and loves being walking distance from the Riverside trail.
