Ask Larry: 'Help! I'm a right-brained thinker in a left-brained subject!'

Jan 21, 2016

Larry Martinek, the creator of the Mathnasium Method, has started responding to student questions via the new Mathnasium Number Sense Blog!  Melanie is a creative student that just can't seem to figure out Math, and is up for any advice that our favorite math guru can provide!  Check out the letter she sent Larry below:

Dear Larry,

No matter how hard I work to improve my grades in math, I just can’t seem to understand it. I’m a right-brained creative person, and I don’t think my brain is wired to understand math. What advice can you give someone like me to survive math classes until high school is over?

~Melanie R., 8th grader

In order to answer this student's concerns, Larry does a great job at outlining the difference between what most people think it means to be able to 'do math', and what it actually means to think mathmatically.  The rote computation of numbers can be a very straightforward 'logical' process, but in fact creativity is at the heart of true mathmatical thinking and true Number Sense!  Check out Larry's full response by following the link to the Mathnasium Number Sense Blog here!
