Mathnasium of Beach Blvd. participated at the 7th annual Jacksonville Family Expo Saturday, Mar. 7, 2015 hosted by Jax4Kids and DCPS. Saturday Mar. 7, 2015. During the 7th annual Jacksonville Expo, Mathnasium, a learning center in Jacksonville, FL operated a booth showcasing simple math problems and strategies to solve them. The booth included display boards and activities that involved algebra, geometry, word, and estimation problems. Prizes were also offered to some lucky winners.

The Jacksonville Family Expo is offered by jax4kids.com in partnership with the Duval County Public School System. It is designed to connect families to local business and organizations that serve the community. Some of the business showcased included summer camps, enrichment programs, healthcare providers, child safety resources and local public or private schools. Prizes and games were also offered to those families in attendance.

Mathnasium’s booth was one of many operated by local education centers. The booth showcased in this article was managed the Beach Boulevard location. The other location is in Mandarin.
According to its website, www.mathnasium.com the Mathnasium Method™ has been designed and refined for over forty years. Created and designed by former math educator Larry Martinek, Mathnasium claims to use a three-component approach to helping students achieve success in Mathematics.

Students’ abilities are assessed and a customized plan developed based on the assessment. Students are then instructed according to their determined needs. Remediation and enrichment are provided to students depending on their level of need. A curriculum and educational strategies have also been developed to enhance the learning styles of students. This curriculum also claims to meet the requirements of the Florida Common Core State Math Standards.

Participants at the booth were invited to try to solve various math problems. The one showcased in this article was the estimation jar. Participants were allowed to observe three jars filled with skittles. Two of the jars were labeled with the quantities they contained. Visitors to the booth had to use this information to estimate how many skittles the third jar held.
