Barry Fausnaugh, Center Director/Owner
Barry received a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Management from the University of Maryland University College (UMUC). He has worked with developing, implementing and managing technology to meet people's needs for over 25 years. Much of his career has been spent consulting both public and private companies on their use of technology and the vast amounts of data that are available for consumption in today's world. In raising his own kids, Barry saw how many kids struggle with math while others seem to excel with little or no problem. As he worked with his children to teach them approaches and thought processes to solve mathematical and logic oriented problems, he realized that something needed to be done to help kids who struggle with math catch up, help those who are managing well to keep up and those who have an affinity for math and desire to do more with math to get ahead. When he came across Mathnasium, he quickly realized that this was the answer he was looking for. Barry believes that mastering essential math skills is crucial to success in today's world and the earlier kids are able to do so, the better off they will be in the long run. Whether a child will be a doctor, teacher, engineer or construction worker, he or she needs a minimum level of math skills. It is possible for kids to learn not only to not hate math but to learn to love and appreciate it and be able to use it effectively as a tool throughout their entire lives.
Kathryn Fausnaugh, Center Director/Owner
Kathryn received a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from Virginia Tech, and quickly went on to pass the Maryland Certified Public Accountant exam (CPA). Prior to joining Barry at Mathnasium of Bethesda, Kathryn enjoyed a distinguished career in Management Consulting. The majority of her early career was spent working for Grant Thornton, a large, international accounting firm, where she achieved numerous accolades for her work on activity-based cost accounting. She went on to found her own successful management consulting firm in 2007. Throughout her career, Kathryn has leveraged her accounting and math skills to successfully help organizations and people solve significant business issues and challenges. In 2015, Kathryn began working with Barry at Mathnasium, helping students really understand math to make their future brighter and better. For as long as she can remember, Kathryn has had a passion for math, and she firmly believes that Mathnasium is the best way to help kids overcome their math anxieties and make math make sense! As a dedicated mom, Kathryn also understands kids and the rigors of daily life and homework!
Kelsey S., Instructor
Hi! My name is Kelsey. I graduated in 2015 with a BA in Mathematics and Spanish from Taylor University (IN). In January 2016, I moved to Bethesda and began working at Mathnasium shortly thereafter. I love working at Mathnasium because the kids are a joy to be around. The one-on-one instruction provides a great opportunity to get to know each student and meet them where they’re at. I love working with students who share my enthusiasm for the beauty of mathematics and seeing the joy on their faces when they learn something new. It is equally rewarding to see students that struggle with math making real progress in their understanding and watching their fear of math dissipating over time. Personally, I have always loved math, ever since I was a little girl. I loved playing 24 (a math game where you combine given numbers to make 24) and participated in MATHCOUNTS competitions. I took advanced math courses including in AP Calculus in high school, but my college math courses challenged me on an even higher level. This emphasized for me the importance of building both a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and a strong sense of self-confidence in math. I am glad I now get to help students grow in both of these essential areas at Mathnasium of Bethesda!
Naa A., Instructor
My name is Naa and I received my B.S. degree from Duke University. I've always been good at math (read: made good grades), but I never really understood it conceptually. I ran into raodblocks because I was having to apply topics that I never really understood. Enduring that struggle made me want to teach, and prevent others from having to go through what I did! I love working at Mathnasium and live for the moment when I can see a math concept "click" in a student's mind. Teaching math, something I enjoy, is very rewarding!
Hoai C., Instructor
Hello, my name is Hoai. I hold a Master's Degree in Pharmaceutics and B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Kentucky. I have always loved learning math, especially since high school. My strong background in math led me to success in science majors, and provided a practical way to earn a living. The best thing about working at Mathnasium? I love working with children, teaching, and continuing to learn math myself. I have also found other math experts in the instructional staff!
Thuyen N., Instructor
Hi! My name is Thuyen. I am currently a junior at the University of Maryland, College Park, where I am attending the Robert H. Smith School of Business and pursuing a BA in Accounting. I also participated in some math competitions on campus such as the monthly Math Questions Contests or the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges Competition. Being a student assistant at one of the math labs on campus helped me gain my experience in explaining/teaching math concepts. Math has always been an interesting subject to me because it is full of puzzles! I enjoy working at Mathnasium because I not only get to teach math, but I get to know and help each student!
