Standardized Test Prep at Mathnasium
Feb 3, 2019
At Mathnasium, our mission is to create lifelong problem solvers. We strive to build a strong foundation of mathematical reasoning skills that will last with our students beyond their school years. This development of strong computational and critical thinking skills helps our students prepare for the numerous standardized math exams that they must complete throughout their years of formal education.
Students enrolled in a Washington D.C. public school in grades 3-8, as well as students taking Algebra 1 or Geometry, will take the mathematics section of a standardized exam called the PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers). The PARCC also includes an English Language Arts section of the exam. According to the DC State Board of Education, the PARCC is a statewide assessment whose purpose is to provide information regarding what students have learned throughout the school year. Key concepts being tested on the mathematics portion of these standardized exams include Number Operations, Algebraic Thinking, The Number System, Ratios and Proportional Reasoning, Expressions and Equations, Functions, Statistics and Probability, Measurement and Data, and Geometry.
If your child is looking to prepare for a college admission exam such as the SAT or ACT (or even the PSAT which can help with scholarship opportunities!), Mathnasium can help your child achieve their goals. We help students build a strong mathematical foundation supporting their understanding of higher-level mathematical concepts that facilitates their success on these college admission exams.
The three main focuses of the PSAT and SAT are divided into categories named the Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Passport to Advanced Math. The Heart of Algebra focuses on linear equations and systems. Problem Solving and Data Analysis focuses on quantitative analysis of word problems. Passport to Advanced Math focuses on higher-level equations. The content covered by the ACT includes the categories Number & Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, Statistics & Probability, and Modeling.
At Mathnasium, we don’t believe in rote memorization of tables and procedures -- we teach kids how to truly understand math. We want our students to have the confidence in their own abilities without feeling dependent on a calculator (which are not allowed for the majority of these exams). Our excellent team of qualified instructors can help your child prepare for their upcoming standardized exam.
