Familiarize Yourself With the Campus and Community

Whether your child is attending a university 10 minutes or 5 states away, adjusting to a new environment can be challenging especially if this is their first time being away from home. Visiting the campus and driving around the community will help to familiarize themselves with where everything is located so that they have no trouble finding what they need when they need it. The university might offer a campus tour which is a great way for you child to learn about the community and meet new people.

Open a Bank Account and Get a Debit Card

If your child does not already have a bank account, this is an important step. This is the best way for them to keep their money safe. It is also an easier way for them to manage their finances. Most banks have apps that can be downloaded on their phones so that they can monitor their spending. This will also make it easier for you to help them or send money if they need it.

Apply For Financial Aid

College comes with a hefty price tag. To help reduce the initial cost, you child should complete their FASFA. This will give them access to federal student loans and grants. If your child waits until the last minute to apply, the might not have access to as much as aid. They also have less time to fix any errors. This tends to happen to many college freshmen which can lead to financial burdens making it hard for them to focus on their courses.

Get Supplies Early

Many students wait until a week prior to school starting before they gather their supplies. At this point, store might be sold out of what they need making them unable to get everything on their checklist. Feeling or being inadequate prepared can cause their grades to suffer.

Setup Housing Ahead of Time

There’s nothing worse than arriving to move-in day just to find out they don’t have you down for a dorm. Make sure your child has signed up for housing early. Many universities have students complete this step during orientation. Finding accommodations off campus in a pinch can be difficult especially for students who are not familiar with the community.
