Steve Lake, Owner
Welcome to our Mathnasium where we believe in the power of math and the mind! Prior to Mathnasium, Steve spent six years as the Operations Manager and a School Administrator for The American International School of Muscat in the gulf country of Oman, running the school’s security, safety, food service, transportation, facilities management, special events, and real estate departments. Making a difference in the lives of 800 students from 60 countries – including his own children – was transformative and Steve knew he wanted to continue that when he moved back to the USA in 2016. Steve deeply values the learning that comes with opening one’s mind to new places, ideas, cultures, and interests. As far as foreign languages, he speaks some Spanish, some Arabic, and Math. Steve earned a Masters of Business Administration from California State University in 2005 and a Bachelor of Arts in Radio-Television Production in 1997 from the University of Houston (Eat ‘Em Up, Coogs!).

Jim Keefe, Instructor
I am Jim Keefe. I have recently retired after teaching all levels of Mathematics (middle school up to and including Calculus) for the past 33 years. I love working with kids and helping them succeed through Math. Math allows thinking to happen! It is exciting to see students when they get that “ah-ha” moment and the light comes on for them! I have worked with many age groups over the years ranging from middle school to high school, to adults. I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Education, certified in Secondary Math, and a Master’s Degree with an emphasis in Adult Education, Professional Development. I am excited about this opportunity to continue working with students and helping them succeed in Math!
Zen Han Chia, Instructor
My name is Zen, and I graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2018 with a degree in Astrophysics and a Minor is Computer Science. During my time in college, I took up a Learning Assistant position and really enjoyed teaching Calculus 1 and 2 since I had a strong grasp and love for math. I enjoyed it so much that I decided to go down this career path and see where it takes me.
I believe that a strong grasp of math will help a person both in his personal life and in his career, as this is a useful skill to have for doing basic things like counting change to tougher activities like investing. In my free time I like to spend time with friends and playing video games. I am planning to go back to grad school in the Fall of 2019 to pursue a phD in Computer Science.
Jackson Heetland, Instructor
My name is Jackson, and I’m a recent graduate from Standley Lake High School looking forward to studying some kind of engineering (there’s just so many to choose from!) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Throughout my school career, I’ve had a lot of fun helping my fellow students with a variety of subjects, as well as tutoring music independently, and I wanted to explore this passion for teaching in one of my favorite subjects, math. Math is one of the most important skills to have, not just because of its role in developing critical thinking and problem solving, but also in its variety of real world applications. I can’t wait to help students become more confident in math, just like my teachers helped me.
In addition to enjoying math, I love spending time with my amazing friends and my adorable cat Ellie, playing video games, practicing the saxophone and guitar, and hiking.
Kylee Pon, Instructor
Kylee Pon is a Colorado native and a student at Legacy High School. She is in the school’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) program as well as the Legacy Chapter of National Honor Society. Her favorite subject is math. She finds it fascinating the things in the real-world that can be explained or determined through the use of math. While she does not know exactly what career path she wants to pursue as of yet, she does know with certainty that it will heavily relate to math.
She spends her free time horseback riding. She competes in equestrian shows and also teaches lessons. She takes satisfaction in being able to help her students and help them grow. She strives to always find new ways to connect with and explain information students. It makes her happy to be able to help them gain confidence in their knowledge and skills. She not only loves horses but all animals. She enjoys camping with her family. One of her favorite hobbies is reading.
Winfield "Penrose" Rose, Instructor
Math has always been the very core of my academic studies. I won math awards in High School and was on the Dean’s List for a while in college. Having once been an Electrical Engineering student, I am now pursuing an online math teaching degree. I recently completed all classes up to and including Calculus III and I successfully passed the Praxis II – Math Content exam toward a teaching certificate.
Tutoring is keeping my math skills sharp and I enjoy helping those at all levels and abilities. I have tutored College-level Calculus, Algebra and Statistics, as well as elementary-level basic math.
While continuing my own studies in math and physics I intend to continue sharing what I’ve learned and hopefully bring inspiration to those who may not realize how magical and fun math can be!
My other passion is music, having been a singer/songwriter/performer for many years. I believe math and music are interrelated on many levels.
