Moneyball: Math, Baseball, AND a Movie, Oh My

Apr 29, 2021 | Bryan

With the summer slide, now turned COVID slide, is upon us it is the perfect time to get your kids excited about math and motivated to excel! A great way to do just that is by turning on math-related movies. Showing a math-themed movie can be an educational and enjoyable experience. And with baseball back in session we found the perfect movie for you to debut.

As discussed last week, Moneyball has strong mathematical elements that can be used to spark discussions and help your kids make connections with what they are learning in class and in-center.

Moneyball (PG-13)

In this movie, the main character, Peter Brand analyzes baseball players using statistics and equations in order to demonstrate their worth, as well as their projected accomplishments. By ignoring appearance and focusing on actual numbers, Peter is able to use math to save money for the professional baseball program.

You won’t find a movie that demonstrates the tremendous role that mathematics plays in professional sports better than Moneyball. Viewing this film can give your kids a better understanding of how mathematics applies to the real world as well as possible career paths, such as becoming a Major League Baseball scout, that require a deep understanding of applied mathematics.
