Summer learning loss is a phenomenon parents and educators have long acknowledged as a significant setback to academic achievement. Experts believe that math proficiency is particularly susceptible to the summer learning slide, and students typically lose two to two-and-a-half months of the math computational skills they learned during the school year during the summer months. Additionally, the summer slide can have long-lasting effects on a student’s academic life, and might also affect the career choices students make.
Research shows that summer math studies provide a solution, and for this reason, Mathnasium offers a variety of programs to attend over the summer. Regardless of the program, we start by conducting a comprehensive assessment in order to identify the student's level in math and then design a customized learning plan, which targets math concepts the student had difficulty with in the assessment.
Students and parents can choose a summer program that fits best into their schedule and corresponds to learning goals they set for the summer. For example, Mathnasium of Bayview Sheppard is offering an unlimited attendance summer program, which is a great choice for students who would like to use the summer time to catch up or get ahead by exercising frequently and reviewing many math concepts. Students, who would like to focus on a specific topic in the summer might want to consider packs of 10 hourly sessions, which can be distributed any way throughout the summer. Popular topics of interest include Building Multiplication Facts Fluency, Working with Fractions, and Problem Solving.
As we strive to make it a fun and engaging experience for students at Mathnasium, all our summer program packages also include unlimited access to our Games Hour from 2-3 pm Monday to Thursday throughout the summer! Students may drop in without an appointment to enjoy fun games developing logic, number sense, and skills. Friends and siblings are welcome!
In addition to Mathnasium's system of rewards and prizes to keep our Mathletes motivated and to support the vibrant atmosphere at the centre, we will be hosting Problem of the Week competitions and various events throughout the summer, such as: Password Day, Lucky Number Day, Freezie Day, Paper Airplane Day, and Lego Guess Station.
We encourage all families who have questions, would like to obtain more information, or would like to schedule a free trial session to contact us by phone at (647) 557-1090 or by email at [email protected].
