As both teachers and math tutors, we can confidently share that one of the most rewarding experiences for any educator is helping a child transform from a struggling student to a confident performing student.
Helping a child learn, and progress academically, especially to levels that they never thought were possible, is why we do what we do, every single day. It is not just motivating – it is the drive force.
When parents and students hear the word ‘math tutor’ they commonly think of a student getting extra help to improve bad grades. While that’s true, math tutoring has so many other benefits that go beyond the classroom and grades. Having the right math tutor can help challenge and inspire students seeking enrichment in their everyday life, and it can help students with exceptionalities (giftedness, autism, ADD, ADHD, dyslexia, language impairment, etc.) build confidence and skills that will not only help them excel at school, but in everyday life too.
1. They see your child as a living human being – not a diagnosis!
For parents who have children with exceptionalities, an official diagnosis can bring comfort (because there is a reason and a ‘name’ for their child’s struggles) and it can open doors & help create a life-changing game plan (as a diagnosis is often required to enable support and programs in both schools and the community).
A diagnosis can also bring stereotyping, judgment, and misunderstanding, all of which make things so more challenging for children with exceptionalities and their families. Unfortunately, a diagnosis can quickly (and far too easily) become a permanent label for a child. This essentially de-humanizes them. This label prevents teachers, educators, peers, family, friends and society at large from seeing past their diagnosis. The child’s true potential or abilities are overlooked and invisible. Talk about frustrating! These children are commonly held back or overlooked because others feel or believe that their diagnosis makes them unable to handle things, cope or excel. The end result is that the child no longer becomes ‘human’, rather they are a case number or a label. Their diagnosis becomes a real obstacle. This heavily weighs on the child’s self-esteem, self-worth and confidence and can having lasting emotional and psychological effects.
Our math tutors here are Mathnasium of Newmarket work with children with exceptionalities all the time. We see beyond their diagnosis and treat them as real human beings. Like any other child, they have unique learning needs and that is what we focus on…that and making math fun too!
2. They provide a safe, pressure-free environment to learn & grow
The pressure felt by children with exceptionalities (and their parents supporting them) can be overwhelming and difficult to cope with. School, family-life, socializing and even every-day life can be challenging. ‘Easy’ is often not a word in their everyday vocabulary.
Many parents of children with exceptionalities wear so many different hats at home to provide the much-needed support their child needs. They fill so many more roles than just ‘mom’ and ‘dad’, which often results in them being overwhelmed, over-worked, exhausted, frustrated, stressed, and spread too thin.
Getting outside educational help from an experienced trusted math tutor can help remove the pressure from the entire family. Our math tutors foster a caring, encouraging, pressure-free environment that helps kids thrive and learn. Our math instructors use our unique assessment process to determine (with great accuracy) exactly what each child knows and what they need to learn. Next, we design a customized learning plan for teaching the concepts the student needs to master. And it does not stop there – our encouraging instructors continually check progress along the way to make sure kids truly understand and retain the concepts we’ve taught.
3. They cater to your child’s unique, individual needs
Private math tutoring is one-on-one, which means your child’s unique needs have 100% of their tutor’s attention. Talk about devotion! In the average classroom, students compete daily for their teachers’ undivided attention, and even the best teachers struggle with providing consistently one-on-one instruction with each and every student. Children with exceptionalities need more individual attention and time with their teachers at school – this is unfortunately not always possible or realistic. As they may not know how to self-advocate (which many people struggle with in general), students with exceptionalities often withdraw and fall further behind.
With a math tutor, a child has a consistent face-to-face expert who is focused on their needs and supporting them every step of the way. Here at Mathnasium of Newmarket, our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting, and our unique approach enables us to effectively explain math concepts well and lend a helping hand to every student. We pinpoint your child’s learning needs, meet them where they are, and take them where they need to go. Your child and his or her needs are supported every-step of the way.
4. They help boost a child’s self-esteem
Any child that struggles in school can suffer from low self-esteem. For students with exceptionalities, this can be magnified. With a label placed on them, and the lack of support in place, they often quickly stop trying, give up, and develop a “I can’t do this” attitude. That attitude can be damaging and destructive to their self-esteem and overall confidence.
Here at Mathnasium, we make math make sense, and we children’s lives through math every day. When math makes sense, kids leap way ahead even if they have exceptionalities. Our formula for teaching kids’ math, the Mathnasium Method™, has transformed the way kids learn math and boosted their self-esteem and confidence for over a decade across 1,000+ centres in the Canada and the US.
The results from math tutoring are transformative – kids will see measurable changes in school progress, but also in attitude, confidence, and self-esteem.
