Are your kids excited for summer? We bet they are, and that you are too! It’s been a year to say that least! A break from homework, studying, tests and the pressure of school in general, probably sound really good to you right now.
It’s true that summer can bring upon a much needed and well-deserved break. It’s also true that math learning loss, called the summer slide is very real…and for kids that are struggling to catch up or keep up, this can have a serious impact on their math learning and self confidence.
Summer learning loss has been studied and researched for over a century – wow!
Researchers at Johns Hopkins University shared that math proficiency is notably more vulnerable to the summer slide. Their findings revealed that students lose “about two months of grade level equivalency in mathematical computation skills over the summer months”. That’s a lot of math leaning loss, and even more troubling is that this loss is cumulative over years.
So, what can you do to prevent your child from experiencing the not-so-fun summer slide?
