Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Grace, Ruby, and James volunteer to walk shelter dogs. Grace walks half as many dogs as Ruby, who walks 5 more dogs than James. James walks 9 dogs. How many dogs did Grace walk?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Spot the dog likes to bury bones in the backyard. On Friday, he buried half of his bones. On Saturday, he dug up 3/4 of the bones he buried the day before. If spot started with 72 bones on Friday, then how many bones did he dig up on Saturday?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  Daniel and his sister Chloe are training their neighbors’ dog. Daniel teaches the dog to sit and speak. Chloe teaches the dog to lie down, roll over, and fetch. They are paid for each trick they teach the dog and get a total of $80. How should they split the money?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  A dog run is three times as long as it is wide. If its perimeter is 312 decimetres, what is the area of the dog run?

Grades 5 and 6:   Another great week of participation and correct solutions to the problem posted this past week!  Gabby correctly solving the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn and she wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of her choice. Well done Gabby!  Also solving the problem was Cooper and Liam who will each receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Great effort put forward by everyone!  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:   A very good week of submissions this week at this grade level.  TWO WINNERS were declared due to so many correct solutions submitted.  Lylah and Luqman managed to solve the problem and were the first "two" correct ballots to be drawn.  Fantastic work Lylah and Luqman, now come and choose a Terrific $10 Gift Card of your choice.  Also solving the problem were Thomas, Adam, Ella L., Meher, Ananya, Japnoor, Ali M. and William.  Everyone work on the problem again this week!!   Mathnasium – Home of the Power Math Workout!
