Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!
Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4: Fennec Foxes have huge ears and can hear a grub up to 6 decimetres underground. Can a Fennec Fox hear a grub that is 50 centimetres underground? State how you know!
Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: A Golden Wheel Spider tucks its legs in and turns its body into an “octagonal wheel” in order to travel across the sand. Its legs hit the ground half a centimetre apart. How many times does the spider have to roll over in order to roll a whole metre?
Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:A Camel can go six months without drinking water. It can also drink water very quickly—114 litres in 13 minutes! Find the rate at which a Camel drinks in litres per hour.
Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: A Barrel Cactus, a Hedgehog Cactus, and a Saguaro Cactus have 1,392 spines altogether. The Hedgehog Cactus has 144 more spines than the Barrel Cactus, and the Saguaro Cactus has 888 more spines than the Barrel Cactus. How many spines does each Cactus have?

Grades 5 and 6: A tricky little problem this past week for our Mathletes at this grade level saw Landon submitting the correct solution and being the first correct ballot to be submitted.
