Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!
Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4: Oscar sketched twice as many portraits as Polly. Polly sketched twice as many portraits as Kate. Kate sketched 4 portraits. How many portraits did Oscar sketch?
Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: Carlo had four 8–kilogram tubs of clay. After he sculpted a 20–pound bust, how many tubs of clay did he have left?
Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8: Tyler shot 7 rolls of film. On each of the first 3 rolls, 16 photos turned out. Fourteen photos turned out on each of the next 4 rolls. If Tyler shoots 1 more roll of film, how many photos need to turn out for Tyler to have an average of 17 successful photos per roll?
Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: Mia has two cans of purple paint and a can of white paint. One of the purples is 30% red and 70% blue. The other is 50% red and 50% blue. If Mia wants 236 millilitres of a mixture that is 20% red, 30% blue, and 50% white, how many millilitres of each kind of paint does she need?
