Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4: The Moon is 3500 kilometres wide. The Earth is 12 700 kilometres wide. How many kilometres wider is the Earth than the Moon?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: For every 2 revolutions Pluto makes around the Sun, Neptune makes 3. How many revolutions does Pluto complete if Neptune completes 21?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8: Callisto, Europa, Ganymede, and Io are moons of Jupiter. Ganymede is not the farthest moon from Jupiter. Callisto’s orbit is not the closest orbit to Io’s. Europa is closer to Jupiter than Ganymede is. Io is the closest to Jupiter. What is Jupiter’s farthest moon?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: Mars has a radius of 3000 kilometres. Venus has a radius of 6000 kilometres. How many cubic kilometres greater is the volume of Venus than the volume of Mars? Give your answer in terms of pi.


Grades 3 and 4: A reasonably good week of participation for the problem presented at this grade level! Lilac solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn. Grades 5 and 6: Our Mathletes at this grade level worked hard to solve the problem posed this past week. Ian correctly solved the problem and he wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of his choice. Well done Ian! Also solving the problem was Jessie and she will each receive "extra punches" on her Reward Card. Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!! Grades 7 and 8: A good effort this past week with trying to submit the correct solution to the problem posed. Inaya managed to solve the problem.
