Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Amelia is constructing squares with toothpicks. To form the first square Amelia needs 4 toothpicks. When she is forming multiple squares in a row, some of the sides are shared. How many toothpicks will Amelia need to form 5 squares in a straight line?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Luke and Milo are in a race to see who can run the fastest between their 2 houses which are in the same neighbourhood. Luke took 3.25 minutes to complete the race and Milo took 3.207 minutes to complete the race. Who won the race and by how many minutes?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  Ananya is shopping for Juice Boxes for her school lunch. She can buy a pack of 8 Juice Boxes for $6.40, or a pack of 12 Juice Boxes for $9.00. Which pack is a better deal and by how much money?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  Sam is a biologist studying a colony of bacteria. In the lab the population of bacteria doubles everyday. The petri-dish that holds the bacteria can hold 100,000 bacteria. If the initial bacteria population is 1000, what will the population be in 4 days? How many days will it take the petri-dish to overflow?

Grades 3 and 4:   An outstanding week of attempting to solve the problem presented at this grade resulted in TWO WINNERS being declared!!  Kiki and Arran solved the problem and were the first two correct ballots to be drawn. Grades 5 and 6:  Another great week of participation this past week as everyone worked hard on solving the problem resulting in TWO WINNERS being declared!  Amy and Daimon solved the problem and were the first two correct ballots to be drawn and they each win a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of their choice. Well done Amy and Daimon!  Also solving the problem was Teng, Ahmed, Claire, Cooper, Japnoor, Eva, Anthony, Milo, Mara, Madision and Hazel and each will receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:  A difficult time dealing with the problem this past week at this grade level.  No Winner this Past Week!!  Everyone work on the problem again this week!!   Mathnasium – Home of the Power Math Workout!

Grades 9 and above:   A difficult problem was posed this past week for our Mathletes.  Cline managed to solve the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn.  Fantastic work Cline, now come and choose an Awesome $10 Gift Card of your choice.   Also solving the problem was Jada who will receive "extra punches" on her Reward Cards  Everyone work hard this week to solve the problem presented.  Show What You Can Do as a Mathlete!
