Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  A sea turtle can swim 5 kilometres every 15 minutes. How far can the sea turtle swim in 4 hours?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  An adult Blue Whale weighs 200 tonnes. An adult Hector’s Dolphin weighs 50 kilograms. How many times the weight of the Hector’s Dolphin is the Blue Whale?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  A giant panda eats 15 kilograms of bamboo per day. If 5 giant pandas live in a sanctuary that produces 70 kilograms of edible bamboo per day and the sanctuary currently has 60 kilograms of edible bamboo available to the pandas, then how long will it take for the pandas to run out of bamboo?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  When a young lemur leaps across the ground, it travels forward 30 decimetres and reaches a height of 10 decimetres in the air. Each leap takes 2 seconds from take-off to landing. Model (in Vertex Form) the lemur’s leap with the equation of a parabola in which “x” = the elapsed time in seconds and “y” = the height off the ground in feet.

Grades 3 and 4:   An excellent set of results this past week of attempting to successfully solve the problem presented at this grade resulting in TWO WINNERS being declared.  Rajan and Daljodh  successfully solved the problem and were the first "two" correct ballots to be drawn.  Well done Rajan and Daljodh, now come and choose a Fabulous $10 Gift Card of your choice.   Also solving the problem was Emilia, Baran, Kiki, Elsa, Anthony C., Allie, Dorrin, Raina, Aiden, Aaron, Amelia and Aiya who will each receive "extra punches" on their Reward Cards.  Everyone try again this week!   Come on, give your brain a workout!

Grades 5 and 6:   Another difficult task this past week attempting to tackle the task solving the problem with everyone having worked hard on solving the problem!  Andy correctly solved the problem and was the only correct ballot to be drawn and he wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of her choice. Well done Andy!  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:   A hard struggle attempting to solve the problem last week at this grade level.  Teju correctly solved the problem and was the only correct ballot to be drawn and he wins a Fantastic $10 Gift Card of his choice.  Everyone try again this week.   Mathnasium – Home of the Power Math Workout!
