Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4: Brooklyn has 154 blocks and Victoria has 342. They combine their blocks to build a castle, and they use all but 12 of them. How many blocks did Brooklyn and Victoria use on the castle?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6: Eli picks up 288 seashells at the beach. He divides them evenly among 12 boxes. Then, he gives 7 boxes of seashells to Lincoln. How many seashells does Lincoln get?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8: A sheet cake is 30 centimetres wide, 45 centimetres long, and 10 centimetres deep. Layla cuts a 10-centimetre by 10-centimetre slice of cake from the corner. How many cubic centimetres of cake are left?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above: A chocolatier receives an order for a 10-kilogram chocolate statue whose cacao content is exactly 40%. The chocolatier has 20% cacao chocolate and 50% cacao chocolate at his disposal. How many kilograms of each does he need to melt together to have exactly the right amount for the statue?
