Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Susan and her parents are making a disaster survival kit. Each of them needs 8 litres of water per day. How much water does Susan’s family need in a survival kit to last 5 days?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:  Women in Gambia often need to transport large containers of water over great distances so that their families have safe water to drink. Siabatou has a container that holds 20 litres of water. Each litre weighs 1 kilogram. The container itself weighs 1½ kilograms. How much does Siabatou’s container weigh when it’s full?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:  A bathroom sink runs at 8½ litres per minute. Daisy uses 250 millilitres of water total each time she brushes her teeth. Jack leaves the faucet running for the full 3 minutes it takes him to brush and rinse. How much more water does Jack use each day if both of them brush their teeth 3 times a day?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:  In Sunnydale, the price of water is $1.50 per thousand litres. Residents of Rainwood are charged a base fee of $9.90 and an additional $0.25 per thousand litres of water used. Write an equation and find the amount of water that will cost the same amount in both Sunnydale and Rainwood.

Grades 5 and 6:   Another great week of participation and correct solutions to the problem posted this past week!  Natalia correctly solved the problem and was the first correct ballot to be drawn.  She wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of her choice. Well done Natalia!  Also solving the problem were Cooper, Scarlett, Liam, Ethan Z. and Maya.  Great effort put forward by everyone!  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:   A difficult problem resulted in a limited number of submissions this past week to the problem posed!  Ali M. solved the problem and was the first correct ballot this week to be drawn after managing to solve the problem.  Fantastic work Ali, now come and choose a Terrific $10 Gift Card of your choice.   Also solving the problem were Nava and she will receive "extra punches" on her Reward Card.
