Mathnasium of SW Calgary - Problem of the Week!

Solve the problem of the week below for your grade level. During your @HOME session, be sure to tell your instructor or email the Math Centre your answer so your ballot can be deposited into your grade level entry box before closing time on Thursday. Students attending "in-Centre" sessions can deposit their ballots in their grade level entry box any time they are in the Math Centre during the week. On Thursday evening (8:00pm), a ballot will be drawn from each Problem of the Week Entry Box and the first “correct” solution drawn from each box will win a Fabulous $10 Gift Card. All other “correct” Mathlete solutions entered will receive “2” extra punches on their Reward Card at the start of their next session in the Math Learning Centre.

Problem of the Week for Grades 3 and 4:  Mila grows red, pink, and yellow roses in her garden. She has a total of 18 rose bushes. Half of the rose bushes grow red roses, six of them grow pink roses, and the rest grow yellow roses. How many yellow rose bushes does Mila have?

Problem of the Week for Grades 5 and 6:   It costs Hank $23 to buy tulip bulbs for his garden. With those bulbs, he grows 160 tulips. He sells each tulip for 85¢. How much money does Hank make in profit?

Problem of the Week for Grades 7 and 8:   An orange tree grows at a rate of 8 millimetres per month. What is its growth rate in centimetres per year?

Problem of the Week for Grades 9 and above:   The population of trillium flowers in a provincial park over a number of years can be modeled by the function f(t) = 1024(2)–2t, wherein t is the number of years that have passed since 2010. When was the population of trillium flowers equal to 1?

Grades 5 and 6:   Our Mathletes at this grade level worked hard and many were successful solving the problem posed this past week.   Mara correctly solved the problem and she wins a Wonderful $10 Gift Card of his choice. Well done Mara!  Also solving the problem were Cooper, Claire, Scarlett, Gabby and William.  Great effort put forward by everyone!  Everyone be sure to devote time this week to solving the problem!!   Become a Mathnasium Mathlete!

Grades 7 and 8:   A very fantastic number of submissions this past week to the problem posed.   Millie solved the problem and was the first correct ballot this week to be drawn after managing to solve the problem.  Fantastic work Millie, now come and choose a Terrific $10 Gift Card of your choice.   Also solving the problem were Meher, Nava, Inaya, Japnoor, Anaya, Bridget and Kareena.  Outstanding effort put forth by everybody.  Everyone work on the problem again this week!!   Mathnasium – Home of the Power Math Workout!
