Frequently Asked Questions

We welcome you to contact your local Mathnasium Learning Centre with any questions you may have about pre-algebra tutoring. Here are some of the more common ones we get:

  • How does Mathnasium’s pre-algebra tutoring differ from regular classroom instruction?

While schools have excellent math teachers, the reality is that in a full classroom, it can be challenging to address the individual needs of every student. Using assessments, we create customized learning plans that focus on specific pre-algebra concepts that each student needs to master.

We start from what they know, fill in any knowledge gaps, strengthen their foundational understanding, and introduce challenging concepts in a structured and sequential manner.

  • Can Mathnasium’s tutors help students who are below grade level in pre-algebra?

Absolutely! Our tutors are experienced in working with students of varying skill levels and learning styles.

Whether students need to catch up, keep up, or get ahead, our tutors are patient, supportive, and skilled in breaking down complex concepts into simpler, more manageable steps.

  • Will Mathnasium’s pre-algebra tutoring help students transition to higher-level math courses?

Absolutely! By building a strong foundation in pre-algebra, students develop the necessary skills, understanding, and confidence to succeed in more advanced math subjects.

With our Mathnasium Method™, we foster critical thinking, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills, which are transferable to various areas of math.

  • What topics do Mathnasium’s pre-algebra tutors teach?

Before moving on to Algebra 1 and 2 we work on these topics:

    • Counting — We focus on helping students feel comfortable counting to any number, from any number, and by any number.
    • Wholes and Parts — Understanding the relationship between wholes and parts opens the door to a range of math concepts and exercises. Once students have this understanding, they have little trouble with algebraic problem-solving.
    • Quantity and Denomination — Exploring quantity and denomination involves two key aspects of numerical value. Quantity addresses "how many," while denomination examines "of what."
    • Proportional Thinking — Building proportional thinking skills is essential for grasping important concepts like ratios, direct and indirect variation, and algebraic reasoning.
    • The Law of SAMEness — The Law of SAMEness is a concept that students intuitively apply in their reasoning, often without realizing it. For instance, before adding quantities of different items like apples and bananas, they need to first make them comparable by giving them a common name, such as "fruit."
  • Can Mathnasium’s pre-algebra tutors help students with homework and school assignments?

Definitely! As part of the customized program, our tutors dedicate time to assist students with their pre-algebra homework. This support reduces stress, fills in any gaps in understanding, and helps students understand the material so they can confidently tackle future assignments on their own.

  • How do you help students master fractions?

Much of what students do in pre-algebra and Algebra 1 is built upon a solid understanding of fractions. We build that understanding by starting at the beginning if needed. We explain what fractions are in a way that students understand. We always tell them “A fraction is just breaking something whole into smaller equal parts!”

Then we address the common misconceptions and challenges associated with fractions, such as confusion between numerators and denominators, the need for common denominators in addition and subtraction, and the concept of equivalent fractions. We do this all while using simple language, such as teaching students that a long, scary word like “denominator” simply means the “name” of the fraction.

This is the best teaching method for long-term retention. It's easy to forget something you've memorized, but it's hard to forget something that you truly understand!

  • What problem-solving techniques for pre-algebra word problems do Mathnasium tutors use?

First, our pre-algebra tutors help students understand the problem, identify key information, and determine what the problem is asking. We often encourage students to create visual representations, such as diagrams or graphs, to help them visualize the given information.

Then, we support students in breaking down complex word problems into smaller, manageable parts and determining the most appropriate approach. Once they execute the solution, we use Socratic questioning to reflect, review, and revise if needed.

  • How can students enroll in Mathnasium’s pre-algebra tutoring program?

Enrolling in Mathnasium's pre-algebra tutoring program is easy. Students and parents alike can use our website or call their nearest learning centre to schedule an initial assessment.

During the assessment, we evaluate the student's math skills and identify areas of improvement. Based on the assessment results, we create a customized learning plan tailored to the student’s needs, including the recommended frequency of classes.

Nicholas has progressed quickly in pre-algebra in his first month at Mathnasium. The staff is very accommodating and very tuned to each child's needs. The tutors are very patient and knowledgeable as well. I can see that his confidence level has gone up tremendously and he is even trying to help his peers now when they struggle with the same material.

Our son has struggled with math since the first grade. We have tried private tutors, but nothing seemed to really make a difference. We joined Mathnasium about 4 months ago, and our son’s progress is remarkable! He is building fundamentals that he had been missing, and that is translating to improved confidence and an overall better understanding of math concepts. Our son has a solid B average in pre-algebra. We are seeing his best math grades ever!

Joshua was struggling with pre-algebra but had balked at the idea of a tutor. I had heard some great things about Mathnasium, so decided to give it a try. From the first day we went in for the assessment, he felt right at home.
