Preparing Your Child For Second Grade

Jun 29, 2021 | Cathedral Heights

With schools transitioning to an online format you may be worried if your child is actually ready for 2nd grade. Don’t fret! At Mathnasium, we can help ensure your child is ready for math class next year!  We work alongside your child to solidify a foundation in math and then build upon it to get them ahead. We teach your child number sense by showing them how numbers work and help them build on their numerical fluency the ability to effortlessly add and subtract.

We create custom learning plans for your child designed to close any educational gaps they may have and will make it easier for your child to jump ahead when they’re ready for advanced math challenges. The Mathnasium MethodTM teaches for understanding rather than memorization so that your child has the ability to solve new problems!

Here are a few key skills we will help your child with to make sure they start 2nd grade strong!

Place Value

Count by 10s, 100s, and 1,000s.

Read and write numbers between 1 and 1,000 in standard form.

Identify ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place.

Understand that "54 ones is the same as 5 tens and 4 ones," for all numbers between 1 and 1,000.

Rounding: "Is 571 closer to 500 or to 600?" for appropriate numbers.

Proportional Thinking

If two pieces of chocolate cost five cents, how much will six pieces of chocolate cost?

Recyclers pay 5¢ for every 2 caps. How many caps are needed to get 25¢? How much are 8 cans worth?

Algorithm for Subtraction of Whole Numbers

Subtract in both vertical and horizontal configurations.

Subtract with and without "borrowing" ("regrouping," "trading")

If your child is comfortable solving these problems, they are ready for a strong start in their 2nd grade math class! Contact us to find out how we can help your child build a strong math foundation for next year or how we can get them ahead.
