The Importance of Being Word Problem Savvy

Sep 11, 2018 | Cave Creek

Math is a constant throughout your child's education. But one especially frustrating constant within math is WORD PROBLEMS. No matter what your student is learning, addition, fractions, algebra, geometry, calculus, physics, chemistry - word problems will always be there.

Why do word problems show up everywhere and at every stage of math? They're words, right? How is that math? Why do we need to learn this?

They keep our minds elastic and nimble. They challenge us to improve our understanding, our memory, and our creativity.

Remember, word problems are examples of everyday math (sure they're a bit exaggerated, but it's about the learning experience, not the practicality). Everyday math problems do not present themselves to 7you as a straightforward math problem. There are no flashing signs on the front door saying "7:30 - 6:48 = ?" so you can figure out how much time you have to get to school.

Check out the rest of this article from the Mathnasium Number Sense Blog. Find out how learning to train your mind to solve word problems can benefit you and your child, not just in today's math homework, but 10, 20 or 50 years down the road.

Then come on back and check out our Word Problem Wednesday blog posts! Come on back to our blog every week - stretch your mind and test your word problem comprehension skills!
