Brainerd Together Cleanup

Jun 21, 2019

On Wednesday, June 19th it was an early morning for Brittany Tallent and Grace Vogel to say the least! When work usually starts at 11 and our math learning center opens at 2:00, there's not much point in waking up at 7:00 most days. Nonetheless, these two were raring to go as they walked into Brainerd High at 8 A.M clad in painter's clothes and double-fisting Starbucks.

Brainerd Together is a community project to renovate one of our city's most historic schools. Over 100 volunteers helped during the week to fix lockers, paint walls, and redo the floors. We learned about this event through the Midtown Council of the Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce

As Grace and Brittany got to work, they were excited by the energy of the volunteers as they beautified the schoo. "We know first hand from thinking about how to maximize the experience at our math learning centers that the environment matters. Kids do better work when they are in a clean, bright, and inviting space and the work they are doing at Brainerd will go a long way toward achieving that goal," said Tallent while reflecting on the experience.

Although they prefer the mental acrobatics they employ as instructors at Mathnasium, Tallent and Vogel were both proud of the work they got accomplished on one of the main hallways as they scraped glue, tape, and old paint before painting a fresh coat on the walls. "It's amazing how much you can accomplish when you get a large group of dedicated people together," commented Vogel as the looked upon her work at the end of the day.

Cheers to that idea! We love being a part of the Chattanooga community and we are excited about the work that is being done in all of our schools, but especially in the Opportunity Zone where the help is needed most.
