Test Prep, Test Anxiety, Low Confidence, and Mathnasium

Mar 6, 2020 | Chula Vista

Many of our students at our math learning center come to us because they are struggling in their math class. For many of them as well, both they and their family are puzzled and frustrated because they are doing well on homework and assignments, just to score poorly on exams and quizzes. It can be confusing and devastating for students to feel they are putting in so much time and effort, and hard work on their assignments and studying just to "inevitably" fail their tests, quizzes, and classes.

Many of our students find themselves questioning what they were thinking, why they made simple mistakes, etc. when their test is returned and/or they are working on test corrections. Most say that either they knew it and forgot under the stress of the exam environment because they felt the stakes were higher, or that they felt the knew the material on their homework, but ended up not fully understanding the concepts when they needed to apply it on their assessment.

For students struggling because their anxiety is overwhelming during a test or quiz, our test prep sessions can help alleviate the pressure of exams, and thinking in extremes - often students get preoccupied with the weight of an exam, what it means to struggle, and other more abstract/existential issues than the task at hand. With consistent goal setting and optimal utilization of their test prep sessions, students will work through the topics that will be covered on their exam, and prove their mastery through mastery checks, which can help them feel that they really are prepared and capable, and over time alleviate the impostor syndrome that many students experience when it comes to math class.

For students who may be struggling on tests and quizzes because they have gaps in their understanding or retention of concepts leading up to the test, or from previous years, open communication with their math tutor and coming in for homework help/assistance with current topics in class in advance of a test (rather than the day or two before) can help students visualize and retain the concepts that they need to know for their test and future chapters.
