What are the Common Core Math Pathways?

Does the Common Core math pathway have you scratching your head?

When Common Core was implemented in the San Diego Unified School District in 2014, middle schools and high schools revised their math pathways to match the State Standards. That means that your student's math classes may look nothing like what you remember from your own high school education. Instead of seeing familiar math jargon such as Geometry or Algebra, you'll be seeing a whole lot of one particular word -- Integrated.

The Common Core Pathway involves testing students at various grade levels to determine their long-term math curricula. The first assessment is administered to all 5th graders starting 6th grade, to either set them on the regular common core pathway or the "accelerated pathway."

Students are tested again at the end of 6th grade, and at the end of 8th grade. There is no assessment at the end of 7th grade -- students in accelerated 7th grade math are automatically placed in Integrated I Advanced in 8th grade.

How your student performs on their 8th grade assessment determines the general course of their high school math education. A more advanced student may finish Integrated III Advanced as early as their second year of high school, and can then move on to Calculus or other AP Courses in their final year. The Advanced Integrated pathway compacts four years of mathematics into just three years -- and includes Pre-calculus content.

However, if an 8th grade student in Integrated I Advanced fares poorly on their exam, they will be placed in regular Integrated II, then Integrated III, and Pre-Calculus by their junior year.

The math pathways vary widely and each student is different. That's why we're here to help!

We have various assessments in Integrated Math, Geometry, Algebra, Quadratics and Linear Math to help students at all stages of their math education -- regardless of their pathway.

We also work 1:1 with students to determine the best learning plan for them. For some students, this may involve a series of touchpoints that focus on difficult homework assignments and test prep. For others, we may advise covering fundamentals through our specialized Mathnasium learning plans.
