Mac Barron

Center Director

Hi, I'm Mac! I attended Hardaway High School, studied Computer Engineering at Georgia Tech, and I'm currently studying Computer Science at Columbus State University.  I have been a member and leader of many extracurricular activities including math team, academic decathlon, marching band, and Model UN.  My tutoring experience began in middle school with a volunteer program in which I tutored peers in math and science topics after school.  I continued tutoring through school-related programs throughout high school, and have worked for multiple other tutoring/learning centers in the Atlanta & Columbus areas. I enjoy all things tech-related, and am an avid video game and music fan.  I love having the opportunity  to continue learning and sharing my knowledge with others.

Christel Barnett

Lead Math Instructor

Hello! My name is Christel! I absolutely love teaching kids all kids of math topics. I hold a Bachelor's of Science in Industrial Mathematics and Statistics from Eastern New Mexico University and am currently finishing my Master's of Arts in Theoretical Mathematics. Some of my favorite topics that I have studied are Differential Equations, Differential Geometry, and Squircles! I have enjoyed tutoring and teaching all kids of students and hope to continue to do so throughout the years!

Tom Hobbs

Math Instructor

Hi. I’m Tom, and I enjoy teaching math to the wonderful kids at Mathnasium! I retired from teaching high school after almost three decades, most of which were spent at Smiths Station High School. I enjoy teaching and learning. I earned my Master’s Degree in Math Education at what was then Columbus College in 1995, and my Bachelor of Science in Communication (Broadcasting) at the University of Tennessee in 1977. Upon graduating from UT, I was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Infantry. Following Infantry Officer Basic, I earned my Ranger tab and Airborne wings before shipping off to Germany, where I spent three years as a platoon leader and, later, executive officer, of a mechanized infantry company. Following that assignment, I came back to Ft. Benning, completed the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, following which I became an instructor for that same course. After completing my five required years, then, as a civilian, I joined Loral Electro-Optical Systems as a MILES (Multiple Integrated Laser Engagement System) instructor at Ft. Riley, KS. When the government contract ended, I came back to the South where I belong, and started working towards earning a degree so I could teach. I’ve been doing that ever since.

JP Parker

Math Instructor

My name is JP. I received a M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2019, and I hold a B.S. in Chemistry from Kennesaw State University. I’ve been a musician for most of my life, specifically finding a passion in music through the art forms of writing and vocalizing lyrics. To me, math is the most frustrating and unforgiving, yet simultaneously the most insightful and beautiful science/art form I’ve come across. The areas of application that I study fall within the predictive sciences, such as Probability and Differential Equations, while my favorite areas of study are Abstract Algebra and Complex Analysis. Helping someone to understand a mathematical concept, especially in a way that empowers them as a learner, is unexplainably rewarding. I’m drawn to it, and I could not begin to tell you why, beyond the fact that 1) I enjoy the process and 2) I enjoy it when people succeemiddld. In my free time, I continue to study math, as I find it to be a bit like a craft at which one gets better with practice.

Kim Dove

Math Instructor

Hi, my name is Kim Dove and I love math.  I graduated from Troy University with a degree in accounting with a minor in comupter science.  I discovered that my passion was for teaching and earned a Masters degree from Auburn University.  I have been involved in education for over 30 years. I have taught everything from 4th grade to college classes.  I served as the director for a math and science program in Alabama for over 10 years and earned an education specialist degree.  I am now teaching middle and high school students in Georgia. My goal is to help students learn that math can be fun instead of a challenge.  It is like a great mystery just waiting to be solved.

Arushi Tandon

Math Instructor

Hi everyone! My name is Arushi Tandon and I recently graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Biology, with a Pre-Dental emphasis. I also graduated from Columbus High School in 2017. I began my journey in tutoring when I was part of a service program in college called WIT (Whatever It Takes) where we worked to serve the underprivileged community in Athens by fostering the development of childhood education through academic exercises designed to combat educational inequity. While I prepare for the exciting adventures ahead, I found an avenue to pursue my passion in mathematics and tutoring by becoming an instructor at Mathnasium. I am also a tutor for organic chemistry, and work with UGA students remotely as they tackle their tough science courses. Additionally, I assist with research regarding biological and psychological affects of asthma in children's lives. Finally, I serve as the social media specialist for Mathnasium and make the cute flyers you see around! I enjoy serving others and bridging the gap between knowledge and understanding by providing students with a unique perspective on education - it is the most powerful tool you can have to change the world.

Colton Redmond

Whitney Polfer

Hello! My name is Whitney!  In 2018, I received my AA degree in Engineering before attending flight school in Tampa, FL. Aviation is truly my passion, and you’ll often find me talking about it. In 2019, I earned my Commercial Pilots License and soon after became a Certified Flight Instructor. When I’m not at Mathnasium, you can usually find me at the airport teaching my students how to fly! As a pilot, I use math during every flight. I love to give the students at Mathnasium real-world applications using aviation! I absolutely love teaching and find it so rewarding. I’m also a Florida native and love to visit my family (and the beach!) whenever I can!

Tanja Hilderbrand
