Is Your Child Ready For Second Grade?

Jun 29, 2021 | Dadeland

There is a lot of concern as to whether or not students are genuinely prepared for the next grade level beginning next Fall. At Mathnasium, we can help ensure your child is prepared for their 2nd grade math class. We take an orderly, logical approach to teaching math. We teach your child number sense by demonstrating to them how numbers work and help them build their numerical fluency - the ability to effortlessly recall addition and subtraction facts.

We create a custom learning plan for each child based on the results of a written and verbal assessment unique to Mathnasium. Their custom learning plan will close knowledge gaps they have, solidify their current foundation, and make it easier for them to progress when they’re ready for advanced math challenges. The Mathnasium MethodTM teaches for understanding rather than memorization so that your child is ready for whatever comes next in math class!

Here are a few key skills we will help your child with to make sure they start off  2nd grade strong!

Place Value

Count by 10s, 100s, and 1,000s.

Identify ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands place.

Read and write whole numbers up to 1,000 in standard form.

Say, "45 ones is the same as 4 tens and 5 ones," for all whole numbers to 1,000.

Rounding off: "Is 321 closer to 300 or to 400?" for appropriate numbers.

Proportional Thinking

"If two candy bars cost 5¢, how much will six candy bars cost?"

"Recyclers pay 5¢ for every 2 cans. How many cans are needed to get 25¢? How much are 6 cans worth?"

Algorithm for Subtraction of Whole Numbers

One-digit number minus one-digit number subtraction in column and vertical formats.

Up to three-digit number subtraction with and without "borrowing" ("regrouping," "trading") in a column format.
