Pi Day Activities 2022

Mar 11, 2022

Celebrate Pi Day with us on Monday, March 14th!

Why do we make such a big deal out of pi? Because pi is a big deal! This irrational number that begins with 3.14 and goes on forever helps us understand so much about our universe. We first learn about pi when measuring circles, but pi is also used to talk to satellites, to measure how fast and powerful a computer is, and even to study the structure of an eye. Pi is used every day to make calculations in physics, engineering, modern construction, space exploration, and so much more. Pi is all around us, and it helps the world go ‘round (and ‘round). It deserves a celebration with lots of fanfare, so that's just what we're going to do — and we'd love to have you join us!

We'll be celebrating in-center from March 1st - 14th, but you can also have some Pi Day fun at home! Try out some of the activities we recommend below and/or watch some of our Pi Day videos with your family!

Pi Day Activities

Bake a Pie
Our favorite Pi Day Activity, making (and eating) pie! This is a fun way to celebrate Pi Day; not only does the name of the dessert (pie) sound like the number (pi), but pies are also typically circular, which means that you can talk about how π is used to calculate the Circumference and Area of circular objects!

You can bake any pie, but if you need any inspiration we invite you to try this recipe for Pi Day Pie!

Complete a Pi Day Word Search
Our Pi Day Word Search activity challenges you to find as many circular objects hidden in the word search as possible! (Hint: There are 47 circular words, none of our students have ever found them all!)

Color a Pi Day Coloring Page
This coloring sheet produly proclaims that "we're all made of π!" Pi is in how we see and hear, it's even in our DNA. To learn more about Pi and all of the places it appears, check out this video that pairs with the coloring page.

Pi Day Videos

The Pi Day Song by Michael Bautista

This feel-good song celebrates Pi Day, with some circle references and other pi-related things snuck in (Hint: check the length of the video)!

The Pi Day Anthem feat. John Sims and Vi Hart

Math is often an inspiration for art, music, and more! In this video, math-artist John Sims collaborates with math-musician Vi Hart to create a “Pi Day Anthem” which presents the first 170 digits of pi set to music.

Pi Day (Parody of Pharell Williams' “Happy”) by the students of MJS

This parody was created in celebration of the “Super Pi Day” in 2015 when the date (3/14/15) was made up of 5 digits of pi rather than the customary 3 digits in 3/14. Even though it’s not a Super Pi Day this year, the parody is still super catchy and we can tell that the students had a blast creating this video!

The Pi Song by Songdrops

If you’re looking to memorize more digits of pi this year, this song might be your key to success! We’ve shared The Pi Song before, but we always come back to it year after year, it’s a classic!

For more Pi Day Songs, check out our Pi Day Playlist on Youtube!
