At Mathnasium, we help kids understand math by teaching the way that makes sense to them. Children who consistently attend sessions at our learning centers enjoy a transformative learning experience and make huge strides in the classroom.
Attitude: When math makes sense, kids develop a more positive attitude toward math.
Understanding: Mathnasium teaches for understanding, giving students the ability to succeed in any math environment. As Larry Martinek, Mathnasium’s Chief Instructional Officer notes, “It's pretty easy to forget things you memorize and near impossible to forget things you understand."
School Progress: When kids learn math in a way that they truly understand, they achieve greater success in the classroom.

"Once again, thank you so much for your support, and your encouragement…I cannot say enough about you guys. Because of the work you guys do with her, she is now a confident 5th grader, ready to tackle this next phase in her life. There is no price a parent will not pay to see their child soar and bloom…thank you for that." - AG, mom of 5th grade student
“…the kids really enjoy going to Mathnasium and so let's keep it as before. We had a family meeting last night and they view Mathnasium as a reward.” – from the mother of 5th and 8th grade siblings
“Mathnasium provided me with extra help on my math homework when it seemed impossible for me to understand. Everyone was always willing to help and go the extra mile to ensure my success. I would strongly recommend others to join Mathnasium because the positive environment truly did make math fun! The SAT prep class was able to bring my score up 100 points, and I was able to get specific help on the problems that I was struggling with most, while also enjoying it!” – Catherine, HS student
"I went to Mathnasium over the summer because I was struggling with decimals and fractions. Mathnasium helped me to understand decimals and fractions and helped me get ahead. The instructors were fun and encouraging. I would recommend Mathnasium to other kids." – Theresa, 5th grade
“I would encourage anyone who has trouble in math or needs the extra help to join Mathnasium. Not only do they help you understand the material, they also give you the confidence you need to succeed. When I first started attending Mathnasium, I was very frustrated and worried about my calculus class, but after a few sessions with the instructors, I began to better understand the material and gain confidence. The instructors are amazingly nice and are well prepared to help with any math problem. If they are not sure about a topic, they will go out of their way to learn the course material and then help you understand. They will always do their best to ensure that one fully understands and learns the course content. I am very grateful for all their help and am glad to say that I was able to pass my calculus class after attending Mathnasium.” – Fatima, college student
"My daughter Julia has been attending Mathnasium since it opened in the summer 2014. I honestly feel it is the BEST thing to come to Calvert County. Mathnasium has put the word "fun" into my daughter’s vocabulary when she now speaks of Math. Julia is basically a straight "A" student with the exception of Math. Since attending Mathnasium, her whole attitude about Math has changed. It is no longer a "foreign language" to her. As a parent I like the fact that an initial assessment is first completed to evaluate your child's Math level and then they start at that level, with the overall focus on getting your child to fully comprehend what they are learning and then they take them above and beyond. Julia totally loves going to Mathnasium she says "they make Math make sense" - something I was not successful at. I tried many times to help her with her Math homework and tried to work with her over the summer breaks but it just did not work. Once I enrolled her in Mathnasium she changed. Kristen became her favorite instructor and now she has such a positive attitude about Math, that I can honestly say that it is money well spent. The overall atmosphere at Mathnasium is conducive to learning. I highly recommend to anyone who maybe on the "fence" as to whether or not to enroll your child- I would say "do it" without any hesitation. Don't look at the cost, look at the outcome of what your child will learn from the teaching they will receive." – Vanessa Hetmansky, mother of 8th grade student
This is what her daughter has to say:
"I have been attending Mathnasium since it opened last summer. Of all my subjects in school, Math is the only one that I had some difficulty in. As hard as I tried I would start off the year with an "A" and by the third quarter it dropped to a "B". So last year my Mom enrolled me into Mathnasium. That is how I spent my summer last year. I really was not very happy with my Mom, but once I got to Mathnisium, I saw that it was actually not as bad as I thought it would be, because it was not at all boring Math. The instructors made Math FUN. Yes I can't believe that I am saying that Math, a subject I don't like was fun. Kristen was my favorite instructor last summer, but then there is also Gunnar who was also fun. Actually all of the instructors were fun to be with, even the owner Ms. Kama. One thing I really liked was that everyone addressed all of us by name. It was like they really cared about you and wanted you to see that Math really can be fun and exciting. I also liked that you were given an initial assessment to see where you need help and then they start at that point and build you up. This past year Math made a whole lot more sense to me and I didn't feel like I was always behind. Also you also get rewarded when you complete your work- that is the best and the prizes are always something that I looked forward to." - Julia Hetmansky, 8th grade student
"I grew up hating math. So, when my kids started school the last thing I wanted to do was to pass on my negativity about the subject. I equipped myself as best I could with learning the new strategies but it became too much for me to keep up with. Try as I might, I knew we couldn’t give my daughters the math confidence they needed or deserved.
Both of my girls loved going to Mathnasium because of the atmosphere established by the teachers. It is a focused, quiet environment while at the same time they are fully engaged as they drive their learning with the encouragement of the teachers. They love the feedback they get from the teachers and the way that they can achieve levels of learning and earn prizes. It sounds cliche, but they really make learning fun.
You can’t even imagine how it feels to hear my girls declare that math is their favorite subject. Both of them are completely confident in approaching math concepts, games and applying strategies to solve problems. I am forever grateful to Mathnasium for giving my daughters a life-long gift of math confidence." - Faith Lewis, mom of 4th and 1st grade students
"I have 2 sons Jackson & Patrick Reilly. Both were struggling last year in their math classes. Jack was a junior and preparing for SATs and Patrick, a sophomore having difficulty. We decided to enroll them both in the Mathnasium. I was a little concerned that the boys would not take advantage of the opportunity to improve but to my great surprise they embraced it and both of them improved dramatically in their ability and in their grade point averages. They went twice a week for their entire third and fourth quarters and always came home smiling. They enjoyed all of the instructors and Ms. Kama. They will both be going back when school starts back up. We highly recommend the Mathnasium and I have told many of my friends and neighbors if I hear that their children may be struggling. In our house we believe that Math is the foundation for so many things so why not do everything we can to give them the opportunity to excel!" - Amy Reilly
"I am so glad I decided to enroll my daughter at Mathnasium! From the moment she walks in the door the staff makes her feel welcome when they look up to say “hello Melissa”. I have seen not only an improvement in grades but in her attitude towards math. Coming to Mathnasium for the past 4 months has given her back a confidence that she can understand math instead of the frustration of “not getting it”. She enjoys seeing how many “punches” she can get and saving her reward cards for that special prize. Often times, she asks when she is going again – a testament to the fact that you guys are making it fun! As a parent, I love Mathnasium for all these reasons plus with the drop in policy I can work her math time around my schedule.
Your staff are always so friendly and definitely make “math make sense”. Mathnasium is AWESOME!" - S.D.
