Roel Florentino, Owner, M.Ed.

Credentialed High School Math Teacher

Roel is a credentialed high school math teacher, currently in his 15th year of teaching. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree and Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics from BIOLA University. He also holds a Master of Arts in Teaching Specialization in Educational Technology. Roel has a long history in education. He has over 20 years of combined tutoring and teaching experience. He was an AVID Peer tutor as a high school senior. He continued on for four more years as an AVID College Tutor to students in 9th - 12th grades, tutoring math. Roel's deep passion is playing a role in the academic success of each child in order for them to achieve their goals and dreams. Roel believes that education is the key to success in life. Mathnasium is the avenue in which Roel chose to provide that to young children.

I love Mathnasium because: I love being able to change a child's life through the subject I am most passionate about.

Stephen Lane, Center Director

Stephen studied pure mathematics at Cal Poly SLO. He wants to finish his degree and obtain his teaching credentials in order to teach at the high school level. Math has always been Stephen's favorite subject, but he has also enjoyed computer science and philosophy. In his free time, he loves to play board games, collect Rubik's cubes and other puzzles, and play competitive Magic: the Gathering.

Favorite Math Joke: If I were sin^2(x) and you were cos^2(x), together we would be one.

In five years, I will be: Teaching or working in a math related field.

I love Mathnasium because: Math is the one subject where you can sit down with a pencil and find something new. Formulas aren't invented; they're discovered. But I think math has a lot of valuable skills to offer outside of just formulas, and I want to share that.


Nicholas Greyn, Assistant Center Director

Nicholas graduated in 2015 from Cal Poly SLO with a B.S. in mathematics. He plans to attend graduate school to obtain his Ph.D in mathematics in order to teach at a university. He enjoys playing video games, solving riddles, reading classic novels, and is learning to surf.

Favorite Math Joke: There are 10 kinds of people in the world: those who understand binary and those who don't.

In five years, I will be: attending graduate school to obtain my Ph.D.

I love Mathnasium because: I believe that their curriculum is the best way to learn math.


Cory Lumsdaine, Instructor

Cory recently graduated from the University of California, Irvine with a Bachelor's Degree in Public Health Sciences. He has been tutoring for over 5 years in mathematics and science. Cory plans to obtain a PhD and become a cancer epidemiologist and research professor. His hobbies include reading, hiking, and record collecting.

Favorite Math Joke: It is a shame parallel lines never meet, because they have so much in common. 

In five years, I will be: working on my PhD in cancer epidemiology.

I love Mathnasium because: their curriculum and method for teaching mathematics works incredibily well. Instead of just tutoring a student; we are able to fill in the gaps and make them more confident in their math abilities. 


Elena Velarde, Instructor

Elena is a sophomore at Trabuco Hills High School where she’s taking Honors Math Analysis and Honors Chemistry. She has loved math since learning 2+2=4. Elena has spent several years helping family and friends with homework of all kinds. She enjoys solving puzzles, playing board games, and hiking. She hopes to eventually become a high school math or chemistry teacher.

In five years, I will be: attending college, majoring in math, of course!

I love Mathnasium because: of its unique approach of teaching math to students of all ages and removing frustration from their learning experience.  I enjoy working with children and experiencing that a-ha moment when math finally clicks for them.


Samer Khan, Instructor

Samer is a graduate student at UC Irvine in the Master's in Public Health program and an intern at the OC Health Department. She did her undergraduate at UCI and finished in 2016 with a B.A. in Public Health Policy and a minor in Biology. Over the last 3 years, Samer has worked with students in grades 1 through 12 as a tutor for Chemistry, Math, Biology, and Spanish. During her year before starting grad school, she was a academic advisor for 10th and 12th graders and helped seniors with their university application essays. As a tutor and now Mathnasium Instructor, Samer is passionate about helping students become confident in their academic abilities and reach their full potential in preparation for their college careers and beyond.
