My child already excels in math. Will Mathnasium address their needs?
Absolutely. Since Mathnasium is customized to the needs of each individual student, we can help advanced students stay engaged and stimulated by introducing them to more challenging math topics. More importantly, we can also help your child to develop even stronger numeric fluency and critical thinking skills, which are essential for continued success in math.
Why do children struggle with math?
If your child is missing key foundational concepts and numerical fluency, it becomes very difficult to keep up in class. As a result of these gaps, that widen over time, we see too many kids fall behind in math. Students then feel confused and frustrated.
What might be happening in school?
Each kid is unique and cannot learn the same way and at the same pace. Schools cannot keep up with the different needs of each student. Teachers must stay “on schedule" and stick to their lesson plan to cover the vast amounts of material including STAAR testing. There really is NO attention to filling those gaps that your child did not master in previous years. This now becomes your problem!
What happens next? The class moves on! Here come multiplication facts, fractions, percentages, decimals, mixed numbers, exponents, ratios, x=?, divisibility rules, algebra, geometry, equations. It never slows down for your child to catch up! They feel overwhelmed, embarrassed, and all alone! They begin to expect and accept failure as the "new normal" and think "I'm just not good in math!" This leads to their hate, fear, and lack of confidence in math! Your child’s math grade begins to suffer!
Is it any wonder why you have to fight with them to do their homework? It is easier for them to fight you. After a while, it just doesn't seem worth the effort for them only to see failure again!
How is Mathnasium different?
Great question! The very first thing we do is put your child at ease and tell them to try their best on the questions we ask them and to let us know the ones that they do not know. Your child is then given both an oral and a written assessment that doesn't feel too easy or too hard. This comprehensive approach helps us get a deep understanding of their current skill level and also how they think! It helps us develop their customized learning plan with clearly identified areas of focus. It also establishes the right launch point to attain their first signs of “success”.
The Mathnasium Method™ complements the learning plan. With this proven method, your child is taught the concepts in a way that makes sense for your child. Your child is taught not just the how (the steps), but also the why for a deeper, long-lasting understanding of the concept. With our teaching method, problem-solving strategies, mental math workouts, and numerical fluency exercises, your child will soon see “success” in math and a boost in their confidence. This is something they have been craving for a long time!
Does Mathnasium Really Work?
Yes! Quite well, but don't take our word for it - Read our Parent Reviews in the right hand column >>
We get 100's of reviews that are glowing about how struggling students come alive after coming to Mathnasium. Their grade increase and their confience skyrockets! Take a moment to read what your neighbors have to say about us.
Why is confidence in math important?
It's not just important, it's critical! With understanding comes confidence. Kids need to see that they can do the work so that they can feel confident! This boost in skills and confidence will spill over to many other areas of your child's life. Gone will be the homework fights! Your child will be engaged and will start bringing home better grades. How do we know this? Because we have seen it over and over again with hundreds of our students!
Are you doing one-on-one tutoring?
Our brilliant, engaging, and inspiring Mathnasium instructors are a qualified and trained team of math teaching experts. They work one-on-one with your child on every topic and ensure your child's understanding through guided practice and Socratic questioning. The instructors also let your child work independently to give them the time to process this new information without the pressure and stress of being watched. The independence also helps to reduce the “psychological reliance”, where the student feels that they need the instructor sitting in front of them all the time in order to be successful.
All the teaching and problem-solving is at the Center. Our instructors are consistently engaged with your child, give them the encouragement, and praise them for their efforts! If the student needs more help we simply teach the lesson again without judgment or ridicule until they "get it." This enables your child to become a confident and independent learner.
Will a private one-on-one tutor work?
Parents need to consider the following questions:
- Is someone addressing my child's specific needs?
- Is the root cause of my child's issue being identified, and will it be addressed?
- Will my child get more of the same that has not worked?
- Do I simply want my child to get by or do I want my child to have a deep understanding with lasting impact?
- Am I preparing my child for the future or for a career in STEM?
- Math is a life skill--do I want my child to have this essential life skill?
Mathnasium offers a meaningful long-term solution. Our solution is not a band-aid fix. We do not want your child to simply "survive" current homework or get by on the test. Your child deserves to have that long-term impact in their math education!
