James Doherty

Assistant Center Director
James is a graduate of Prince George's Community College with an associate's degree in Secondary Education, with plans to complete a 4-year degree and become a state-certified science teacher. Passionate, dedicated educators made a serious difference in his life, and he wants to develop that same impact with the next generation of students. In his free time, he enjoys keeping up with technology when he's not spending time with his friends or his cat. He is excited about Mathnasium because it is driven by developing practical number sense as a skill instead of context-less memorization and drilling. Favorite number: 96 (So many factors!) Math joke: Parallel lines have so much in common. It's a shame they'll never meet!

Ian Delk

Senior Lead Instructor
Ian is a graduate of University of Maryland, College Park with a Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering. His favorite subjects are math and science. In his free time he 3D prints and paints miniatures and plays video games. Ian loves applying math concepts to the real world and helping students bridge the gap between classroom learning and applicable skills. Rayn Ali

Instructor
Syed Rayn Ali is a senior at Al Huda School going to UMD this Fall 2023, where he is pursuing a STEM major with a particular interest in Computer Science or Biomedical Engineering. In addition to his academic pursuits, Syed Rayn is an accomplished athlete, showcasing his talents in soccer, table tennis, and video games. He proudly represents his school as a member of the soccer team and engages with like-minded peers in the Syntax and Vector Club, exploring the realms of programming and computer graphics. Within the realm of academia, Syed Rayn finds a deep appreciation for mathematics and physics. His passion for these subjects is further nurtured through his involvement with Mathnasium, where he not only strengthens his own skills but also helps others understand mathematical concepts from his unique perspective. Syed Rayn's favorite number is 10, a symbol of symmetry and balance that resonates with him on multiple levels. Furthermore, his math-related sense of humor shines through in a joke he enjoys sharing: "Why was math class so long? The teacher kept going off on a tangent."

Kevin Wagner

Instructor
Kevin Wagner graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Management Science and Information Systems. Kevin is the father of a second grader who excels at math. Kevin is a lifetime member of The Catskill 3500 Club, a club of hikers who have climbed all of the high peaks in the Catskill Mountains in Greene county, New York. Kevin’s love of mathematics took off in high school, when as he was filling out a punch card deck in Computer Science class, and his teacher approached him to take his pre-Calculus class next semester. At first, Kevin struggled with the new concepts, but once the “light turned on,” he went on to ace AP Calc. Kevin’s love of Calculus continued through his time at Penn State where he tutored other college students. Favorite number: 7 Why is 6 afraid of 7? Because 7 ate 9.

Simone Skerritt

Instructor
Simone is a UMD graduate with a degree in studio art. He has worked as an art instructor as well as an elementary reading and math tutor. Simone believes math, like art, is for everyone and he is passionate about helping students of all ages develop the confidence and skills needed to explore the world, be that through art, math, literature, or science. In his free time, he can be found watching horror films, trying to teach his dogs to wrestle, and drawing cartoons.
