How do I interpret the PARCC scoring?

While NJ ASK's scoring matrix was previously setup to determine if the student is "Advanced Proficient", "Proficient", or "Partially Proficient" in the subject matter, PARCC has changed this type of scoring scale.  Under the PARCC scoring system, students will be put into the following categories (or performance level descriptors PLDs):

  1. Level 5:  Student has DISTINGUISHED command of the knowledge, skills of the materials as defined by the Common Core State State Standards
  2. Level 4:  Student has SOLID command of the knowledge and skills of the materials as defined by the Common Core State State Standards
  3. Level 3:  Student has MODERATE command of the knowledge and skills of the materials as defined by the Common Core State State Standards
  4. Level 2:  Student has PARTIAL command of the knowledge and skills of the materials as defined by the Common Core State State Standards
  5. Level 1:  Student has MINIMAL command of the knowledge and skills of the materials as defined by the Common Core State State Standards

Essentially these PLDs is supposed to be a gauge of how prepared your student will be heading in college. In my experience with NJ Ask, I have found that the scores from NJ Ask can affect what math class a student can get into in the high school.  Since our students are being tested on their math efficiency, why worry about where they will be placed at this point?  The more important question I would like you to think about now is how solid is your child's math foundation?  Without the basic foundation in math, your child will evidently struggle throughout his/her math class.  And if the PARCC is suppose to test your child's cumulative math skills, we should really reconsider how we can help our children solidify their mathematical foundation core material and then work their way into the more difficult material.
