Owner/Center DirectorKaren Ross, Owner/Director

Karen has a background in business but her passion is working with kids in an educational setting.  She graduated from Michigan State University with a BA in Business Administration.  She has worked in accounting for Ford Motor Land, Ryder Systems and Chrysler Financial.  Karen left the corporate world to help raise her family and jokingly notes she took early retirement while still in her 30’s.  Karen has been active in the local school district and previously served as Vice President of Forest Hills Central High School PTO for two years.  She has been a Faith Formation teacher at her church teaching students in grades 1-8. Prior to opening Mathnasium, Karen was a substitute teacher for Forest Hills Public Schools. It is important to give back to the community so Karen is also a volunteer at the Forest Hills Fine Arts Center. Karen loves working with children and wants to help students love math by teaching them in a way that makes sense. All four of Karen's sons graduated from the Forest Hills Public Schools.

Karen was excited about combining her enthusiasm for education with Tom’s business background.  Karen will serve as the Director of Mathnasium of Grand Rapids – East and looks forward to opening future Mathnasium learning centers in West Michigan.

Karen's favorite math joke is: What do you call an empty parrot cage? A polyon

Tom Ross OwnerTom Ross, Owner

Tom has a broad background as a financial and operational executive for large and small companies.  He most recently was a part-owner of an education company, with 17 schools in six states.  Tom helped start American Education Group in early 2007, backed by $40 million of private equity.  It was in this role he came across the Mathnasium Method and its innovative approach with individualized instruction and customized curriculum in math tutoring.  Notably, Tom was impressed by the measurable results for Mathnasium students and the passion the founders have for the education industry.  Tom concluded that Mathnasium is consistently the most effective math learning program available.

Tom started his career as a CPA after graduating from Michigan State University.  He was initially a math major before switching to a more employable career in accounting and finance.  After joining the business world, Tom spent about 20 years climbing the corporate ladder and became the top financial person of Perrigo, a publicly held pharmaceutical company in Michigan with over $1 billion in revenue.  He pursued his entrepreneurial dreams, leaving to bring a small West Michigan company public.  In the past 10 years, Tom has co-founded an outsourcing company specializing in human resources, and most recently the education company. Four years ago Tom became President at Grand Rapids Aeseptic Manufacturing located in downtown Grand Rapids.  In addition, he is a private investor in smaller growth companies.

Brendan Ross, Assistant Center Director

Brendan is the son of Karen and Tom and has worked at Mathnasium since its opening in 2011. Brendan graduated from Forest Hills Eastern High School and is very familar with the math curriculum. He has a passion for theoretical mathematics, always searching for why things work in mathematics. He strives for his students to search for this understanding as well.
