Instilling Confidence and Mastery with Team Teaching
Jul 2, 2017
Here at Mathnasium, students receive a combination of one-on-one attention and independent learning time while interacting with multiple instructors during their sessions; we call this Team Teaching.
Team Teaching allows students the opportunity to interact with multiple instructors throughout their session, which helps to develop confidence and independence.
When an instructor introduces a new topic, they work one-on-one with the student to ensure they have a solid understanding of the concept before challenging the student to try a few problems on their own. As students see they are able to do the problem on their own, it builds their confidence in their own abilities. At the same time, if a student hits a stumbling block, our instructors are ready to jump into action and help students make the leap to understanding. At Mathnasium, through Team Teaching and allowing students a certain amount of independence, we’re able to ensure that students have fully mastered new material while instilling the confidence they need to perform independently. We can’t be there to help them on that big test in school, but we can help make sure they are prepared and have the skills and confidence to succeed.
Too often we hear students coming to Mathnasium for the first time say they hate math. We say students don’t hate math. Students hate feeling frustrated and confused by their classwork and homework. Whether they are struggling with a teacher’s explanation, or hindered by fundamental knowledge gaps from previous years, students may develop a resentment towards math. Through Team Teaching, we expose students to multiple instructors in order to guarantee that they are getting an explanation that “clicks” for them. Finding the explanation that “clicks” for a student is a key focus at Mathnasium and why we say we “teach kids math in a way that makes sense to them.”
