Our Team

Our specially trained math instructors will teach your child how to understand math in an individual setting; our unique approach enables us to explain concepts really well and lend a helping hand to every student. Center DirectorPhyllis Norton, Center Director

Phyllis earned a Master's Degree in Education (Curriculum and Instruction) from National-Lewis University in Stuttgart, Germany; a Bachelors Degree in Business from Wayland Baptist University in Honolulu, Hawaii; and an Associate Degree in Marketing from Pikes Peak Community College in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Phyllis has taught Pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade for over 20 years. Her experience in both the private and public sectors brings a wealth of knowledge in education strategies and techniques. She enjoys encouraging the educational growth of each child while maintaining a positive learning atmosphere. As a proud military spouse for 35 years, Phyllis has moved over 20 times. She and her husband, David, have three sons. Ben is a UAH graduate with a major in graphic design and lives in Maryland with his wife, Stephanie, and their dog, Kapono. Identical twins, Aaron and Matthew, who have graduated from Bob Jones High School and are attending Calhoun Community College. 


Erik Anderson, Instructor

Erik graduated from Oakwood University. He is married and he and his wife recently had a baby girl. Erik has been teaching at Mathnasium of Huntsville since August 2016.

Favorite Math Topic: Algebra

Hobbies: Reading and watching history documentaries

Fun Fact: Erik is a first generation born American citizen.

Favorite Math Joke: 

     Q: Why couldn't the angle get a loan?

       A: His parents wouldn't cosine!


David Burbank, Instructor

David was born on Tachikawa Air Base in Tokyo, Japan. He taught high school in Brazil for two years after graduating from college and has taught in Huntsville City Schools for over 26 years. He is a proud grandfather of three children. David has a PhD from the University of Wales, a Master's Degree from the University of Alabama, and a Bachelor's Degree from the University of North Alabama.

Favorite Math Topic: Algebra

Hobbies: Traveling and hiking

Fun Fact: David has worked with German foreign exchange students since 1996. He lives in Germany approximately two months out of the year every summer.

Favorite Math Joke: 

     Aglebraic symbols are used when you don't know what you're talking about!


Steed Cain, Instructor

Steed is a currently a student at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He is double majoring in Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering. He is originally from Blount County, Alabama.

Favorite Math Topic: Calculus and Probability

Hobbies: Playing his guitar and hiking

Favorite Math Joke: 

     Q: Why is math so easy for the Romans?

       A: Because X is always 10!


Michelle Jefferson, Instructor

Michelle is a Math Education graduate from Oakwood University. She and her husband have three wonderful children, all boys! She says that math is pretty much her life and she loves to teach. Michelle is currently pursuing a Master's Degree.

Favorite Math Topic: All of them

Hobbies: Reading and playing tennis

Fun Fact: Michelle was born in Guyana, South America. She grew up in New Jersey before moving to Alabama to attend college.

Favorite Math Joke: 

     Parallel lines have so much in's a shame that they'll never meet!


Tessa Kim, Instructor

Tessa is a rising Senior in high school at Covenant Christian Academy. She is the fourth child of six. She loves math and is planning on studying engineering in college.

Favorite Math Topic: Graphing functions

Hobbies: Playing piano, spending time with friends, and watching Korean television dramas.

Fun Fact: Tessa is learning to speak Korean.

Favorite Math Joke: 

     There is a fine line between the numerator and the denominator. Only a fraction of people will get the joke!


Naz Stapp, Instructor

Naz is a teacher who recently got married and moved to Huntsville with her husband and cat. Her very much loved cat's name is Freddy and he just turned 13 years old! Naz has a Bachelor's Degree in Math and a Master's Degree in Education in Mathmatics. 

Favorite Math Topic: Fractions and solving equations

Hobbies: Playing with her cat, watching TV, and reading.

Fun Fact: Naz is 4 days older than her husband.
