San Diego Mathnasium Centers ‘Share the Love’ for Education and Military Families in February

Feb. 1-28, 2019: Donate school supplies for local military families served by the Armed Services YMCA at select Mathnasium locations

During the month of love, Mathnasium of La Costa will join other San Diego Mathnasium locations in leading a community initiative to “Share the Love” for education. The community at large is encouraged to stop by their neighborhood Mathnasium Learning Center location from Feb. 1-28, 2019, to donate school supply items for families served by the Armed Services YMCA in San Diego and Camp Pendleton.

School Supply Donations Needed for Spring Semester Learning

School supply donations are typically the strongest at the outset of the school year, but typically only last until January. That’s why the team at Mathnasium of La Costa and San Diego County will host a drive in February to collect items for local military families served by the Armed Services YMCA.

Suggested school supply donations include new, in-package items such as pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, rulers, protractors, and more. These essentials will ensure that the children of military families have the best materials to finish this school year strong. “There really is never enough we can do for our military families and this is an easy way to thank them for their service and strengthen the educational foundation of the elementary, middle and high school youth in our network,” says Tim Ney, Executive Director, Armed Services YMCA San Diego.

Suggested Donations (Items should be NEW and still in their original packaging)

  • Spiral notebooks (wide or college ruled)
  • Notebook filler paper (wide or college ruled)
  • 1 ½” or 2” Binders
  • Subject folders or tab dividers
  • Pencil box or pouch
  • Markers / Colored Pencils
  • Blue or Black Ink Pens
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Pencil Sharpeners
  • Glue Sticks
  • Ruler
  • Protractor
  • Crayons (any size box)
  • Kleenex
  • Disinfecting Wipes
  • Construction paper
  • White copy paper
  • Permanent markers (Black, Blue, or Red ink)

Children and families who bring in donations to their neighborhood Mathnasium learning center will receive a free “Homework Pass” which is access to a one hour session at no charge to receive guided math instruction on a homework assignment that may be particularly challenging. Certain restrictions may apply.

Mathnasium Shares the Love of Math Every Day of the Year

Since 2002, Mathnasium has provided math instruction to students in elementary through high school. Each child is different, so after an initial conversation between instructor and student, the child completes a written assessment and in collaboration with the student’s parents and teacher, an individualized learning plan is created to address the student’s exact needs and math goals.

Mathnasium instructors also provide homework help to assist students in understanding assignments to transform frustrations into welcomed challenges. Mathnasium students grow more excited, confident and prepared to complete math assignments at home, and parents see their grades reflect that.

“Our instructors strive to show students that math is fun and that they can be good at it with repeated individualized instruction, guidance and practice. They can really learn to love math,” says Karen Lossing, Executive Director of four San Diego Mathnasium locations. “We want our students to not only do better in school, but also excel in all areas of life. Math education is vital for success in the professional world. Each day the future is becoming more technical and dependent on STEM professions. Strong math skills will best prepare our students to be confident, productive and successful members of the workforce.”
