Mathnasium of Lake Forest celebrates its first anniversary on Pi Day

Feb 23, 2015

On Saturday, March 14, 2015, Mathnasium of Lake Forest will celebrate its first anniversary. March 14th is also Pi Day and epic this year as the first five digits of Pi align with the date –3.1415. Mathnasium – The Math Learning Center, is a math-only, after-school educational programs, for students in 2nd through 12th grades. “We are excited about sharing a day that celebrates math by celebrating how we have been making math make sense to kids in Lake Forest over the past year,” said Carlos Rodriguez, Center Director for Mathnasium of Lake Forest. Mathnasium, located at 514 N. Western Avenue around the corner from Egg Harbor Café, will be open from 1 pm until 3 pm with games for kids, prizes and an opportunity to learn more about how math can be fun.

Mathnasium provides a nurturing environment for students to develop their math skills and to build confidence in their math-related abilities.  Whether a student is looking for enrichment, struggling to stay at grade level, or catching up, Mathnasium employs a comprehensive diagnostic exam to develop an understanding of a student’s strengths and determine what gaps there are in their learning.  With this information, Mathnasium creates a customized learning plan for each student tailored to their needs. In addition, Mathnasium couples this individualized learning with instruction in number sense and numerical fluency which are critical foundations for future success and higher math understanding.

Karen and Steve Santacruz, owners of Mathnasium locations in Lake Forest, Kenilworth and Glenview, reflect back five years ago when they opened their first Mathnasium in Glenview. “When I think about the impact we made since we opened, we are blessed to know we have helped children in learning math.  During the past five years, we have enrolled over 1,200 students and given over 45,000 math lessons. I like numbers but those numbers are incredible,” said owner Steve Santacruz. “One mom told me that her son went from a 43% score on the math portion of a standardized test in the beginning of the year to an 80% at the end of the year!  These wonderful stories are what we are celebrating.”

‘A gymnasium develops the body. Mathnasium develops the mind.’
