Have you ever wondered what goes on inside Mathnasium of Littleton?

Jan 13, 2023 | Littleton

Today you’ll get a glimpse into the happenings of your local center as we follow students through their first experience at Mathnasium of Littleton.

Q: What is the first thing a brand new student does at your center?

A: All potential students take a quick tour of the center and see all the amazing rewards they can earn before taking a comprehensive math assessment to find out areas we need to support them in. Once they are finished, they can buy an item from our rewards cabinet. Then on their first day, they get their binder and an instructor gives them an orientation to the center and all the ways they can earn rewards.

Q: What is the comprehensive assessment? How long does it take to finish?

A: Our comprehensive assessment includes 20-30 minutes getting to know the child. We find out what they like to do, what their pet's names are, movies, books or video games they're into, their least favorite subject in school and more. All of this is to help reduce some the fear and anxiety they might have coming in to do math! Next, we ask a few baseline questions verbally to get a sense of where the child is struggling in math. Maybe they find fractions horrifying or perhaps they stink at their multiplication tables. Some kids struggle with word problems or figuring out the difference between multiples and factors. This knowledge helps us choose the right level of assessment. We don't just automatically give them their grade level assessment because some kids are ahead of their peers in their grade level and many kids have concepts and skills that didn't stick from earlier years. This allows us to completely customize the plan of action specifically for each student who walks through our doors!

Q: How often should I bring my student to Mathnasium of Littleton?

A: Most students attend two or three times a week. A few students attend more often up to 5 days a week but this is the exception.

Q: Who are the people teaching my child?

A: We have an amazing team of 15-18 instructors at any given time. I try to always have a balance between male and female instructors as well as a nice range of ages from exceptional high school and college students to adults including current and former classroom teachers. They are all amazing people who are good at math and love working with children! That's what makes getting a job here challenging. It's one thing to be good at math and another to enjoy working with young people ranging in age from 6 to 18 or older. All have been thoroughly trained in the Mathnasium Method and undergo continuous training at our staff meetings and through the live trainings Mathnasium offers with our founder Larry Martinek.

Q: When can I bring my child into Mathnasium of Littleton?

A: We are open afternoons and evenings plus Saturday mornings during the school year including both in person instruction at our center and live, face-to-face instruction through our online platform, Mathnasium@home. During the summer, we switch up our hours a bit and have morning and afternoon sessions during the week to try and accommodate both camp schedules, working parents schedules and give families time to get out and enjoy the beautiful Colorado outdoors!

Q: How do you motivate your students at Mathnasium of Littleton?

A: We are always looking for ways to motive kids at our center, particularly those who start off hating math! We have the rewards program where children earn points for their hard work and accuracy which they can then convert to money to buy items from our rewards cabinets or order something from Amazon. They can also request gift cards to any store they would like. In addition, we have center-wide contests at both the individual and team levels. Points are awarded just like for the rewards cabinets, however, the winning individuals or teams get additional rewards points and if it is a team contest, the winning team gets a party (pizza, ice cream or cookies depending on the time of year). Furthermore, we have quarterly drawings for extra rewards points for accuracy as well as our $100 for 100% drawing where one lucky student each quarter can earn a crisp, brand-new $100 bill! All in all, we do our best to live up to our value of Fun by making Mathnasium of Littleton the funnest place to do math!
